My brother gave me an older 320GT after my first saltwater fishing trip. On that first trip, I had my trusty catfish rod and reel, Zebco 888 with 30lb braid and a Catfish Ugly Stik. I hooked into a very large stingray and that's where the Zebco gave up the ghost, the plastic housing actually got hot! The next trip was with the Penn with 80lb braid and Tiger Lite Ugly Stik., much better suited for this kind of fishing. I've landed many sharks 4' and under, and stingrays up to 60lbs with this outfit. After 4 years of fishing with this reel, the drag gave out on me last year. I'm a bit of a tinker, so I tore it down during the winter and fixed it. But I don't have the complete faith in it now, so I ordered a new Penn Fathom 60 series as my primary reel. Now the 320GT will be my backup. The reason I went with the Fahom over a new GT was the drag; 30lb versus 12lb.

I have the 330 series on an ugly stick catfish rod and use 25-40 lb mono for catfishing. This reel is easy for beginners, easy to cast, and the best deal for the price. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a reel to pull in big fish.
I use 1oz egg to 8oz bank sinkers and the reel can quickly adjust to the different weight. Casts smooth even when your going for distance! It can withstand river bouty punishment and perform very well every time.

What can I say? It's a Penn reel. Made in USA or China, doesn't matter because quality is still there.
If you can only buy one reel this year, I think the GT level wind should be the one. It's versital enough to handle a multitude of species and fishing styles. And it will last too.
I'd also pair it with an UglyStik Striper model pole. One heck of a combo for under $150 bucks. Nice.

I purchased the 450 reel and paired it with a Offshore Angler Power Plus Rod. Great combo and smooth reel. First time out I pulled in a 25 pound 45 inch striper and took under 2 minutes with 100 pound braid. Highly recommended.

I'm going to Brazil for fishing at amazon river. I'm going after the big ones and I want to combine this reel with a 80 lb braided line and a 90 lb rod. Is this strong enough to handle such a heavy fishing and for how long? I mean, in case I need to drag the fish, is this reel going to work out?Answers

i own the reel but do not use that kind of line, however if i were in your shoes and had this reel i wouldnt buy a different one. i think it would perform very well with that line.A:Â
oh yes!!! i use 65lbs and 90lbs testTop 25 Contributor

This series of reels is rated for 20-65lb test braided line, depending upon which model you choose. According to the chart for each reel, it should tell you what size line is optimal for that particular reel. If you choose to use smaller diameter line, or larger diameter line, there is a very good chance that you will run into problems when you are casting. However, if you are like me; you will go ahead and spool your reel up with 80lb test braided line to see how it works! Good Fishing.

I am looking forward to getting this reel, but I don't know what rod to use for this reel. I am thinking about spooling this up with 65lb braid, and it I will be using this to fish BIG amberjack, bull dolphin, yellowfin tuna, and some nice sized sailfish. Im thinking about using my 5ft rod with rolling guides. What do you think?Answers
A:Â
yes it handles 15lb bluefish which some say if they were as big as stripers they would eat your boat a 75lb yellowfin, 30lb dolphin, or a 65lb kingfish wont even make a differenceA:Â
Ugly Stik Tiger 7' MH 30-60 # Line or Ugly Stik Tiger Lite Jigging H or XH.A:Â
I like the Penn Power Stick. Since I am a Penn guy I would recommend the Penn Power Stick, Tuna Stick or Mariner. The Ugly Stick would work just as well. So long as you have a conventional rod it really does not matter.A:Â
7 ft. shakespear tiger rod 30 lb.classA:Â
I don't think the GT series will hold up to your efforts. I've got a 321 GT and use it to troll for stripers. IMHO, they're designed for jigging and trolling for species up to 40 lbs. The drag and graphite frames aren't designed for your quarry. Anything requiring roller guided rods needs a heavier series reel.Answers
A:Â
No, this is not a casting reel in anyway. This reel would be best used for trolling, bridge fishing, still fishing or anything that would preclude casting.A:Â
yes. i own a 320 GT2 and i throw 6-8 ounce weights well over 75 yards. just get the feel for the weight and type of rod you use with the reel and its settings.1 of 1
