Rated 5 out of 5 by great reel this reel is amazing for the price, a true workhorse strong drag pulls in sharks like nothing November 28, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by its a penn Great for a beginner like myself. Realized the difference in casting compared to a non level-wind. Still a nice reel! July 17, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Reels like a dream. Just used this reel for the first time yesterday of the coast of Japan. Brought in some Mahi, Yellow Fin, and Wahoo with greater ease then the spin reels I usually use. Love this reel! July 14, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Penn Quality My Fiance' got me a Penn Defiance 25LW reel/rod combo for my birthday. She Loves Me!! :-) Anyways...although I haven't hooked onto a fish with it yet; it is not for a lack of trying! What fishing I have done with it I have to say this: Very smooth casting and retreiving. Unlike any reel I have ever owned. I loaded mine with 80lb Spider Wire and usually run a steel leader with a 2 - 4oz weight and a 7 - 0 hook. I have no problem getting out 200 - 250ft per cast, even into wind. The easy settings of the freespool and drag are great! Can't wait till I can finally hear that famous "Zing" of a good fighting fish and really give this combo the ultimate test! March 9, 2012

Although I haven't attempted surf fishing with mine yet, I do plan to do so in the near future. I believe this reel will do very well for surf fishing. Just remember, if your going to do alot of surf fishing, the rod action and length is just as important as the type of reel.
