The solid metal body keeps gears aligned even when under load, and the advanced Superline Spool eliminates a step: no need for backing, as the rubberized gasket stops slippage. HT-100 drag washers provide tough, smooth resistance. Six stainless steel ball bearings, Techno-Balanced spool, and machined-aluminum handle give perfectly smooth retrieves. Line recovery in inches per handle turn.

This is by far the best reel I have ever used period! I have owned everything from Abu Garcia, Pinnacle, Quantum, and even other Penn reels and nothing comes close. The build quality is exceptional, water tight, corrosion resistant, and rugged. It handles big fish with ease due to the new HT-100 drag system and even after fighting several Kingfish on the Gulf Coast the gears were still as smooth as the day I bought it. I only have the 3000 size, which I purposely bought in this size so that I could pair it with a light medium graphite rod for jigging for Spanish mackerel and Pompano. I fish the piers in the Pensacola area frequently and often hook into larger species that I wasn't intending on catching (that's the beauty of fishing the Gulf I guess). After reeling in two Kings while trying to catch Spanish, the 3000 handled both of these fish like a much larger reel. I was able to land both fish and both were over 30'. Not huge fish, but big enough considering the size reel I was using. The attached pic is a 42' bull red I caught using this reel to give you some perspective. You don't need to buy a huge reel in this series to land quality fish. A 5000 or above would be overkill. I use braid exclusively on this reel and the rubber gasket in the center of the spool really does prevent slippage without having to use tape or anything else to keep the braid secured to the spool. I highly recommend this reel to anyone who wants a quality reel that won't break the bank and that will last a long time. It's built like a tank, but is as smooth as silk. It is completely sealed so clean up at the end of the day is as easy as spraying down with a garden hose. Penn really did their homework on this reel….can't say enough good things about it! In fact, I am so impressed with it that I intend on purchasing two more to outfit larger surf rods I own.

I will keep this short. I am aware some people have had success with these so try at your own risk. I bought the Battle 4000 combo, put 20# Sufix 832 on it.
When throwing DOA shrimp and other light twitch baits I get horrible wind knots every couple casts.
I know what you are thinking, its not over spooled, closing bail by hand etc, all the "causes" were ruled out, And it isnt user error, I took the braid off the reel and put it on a cheap Shakespeare reel, then I put that reel on the same rod I was using. Went out throwing the lightweight lures over 60 times, I could not get a wind knot. I'm happy that I finally figured out why I was getting so many, but not too thrilled that I now have to buy a different reel. (Been too long to return it)

This reel is tough and smooth. It helped me slay a ton of bluefish about 2 miles off Dania Beach pier. I would recommend putting braid on this reel because it is specially made for it and casts crazy distance.
