I fish cape cod roughly three times a week for 5 1/2 months out of the year. I bought two 6000s two years ago. the reels were great the first summer. like they were out of the box new every time I went out. the second year they started to reel rougher and had some problems with the drag seizing up while fighting a fish and had to break it loose by spinning it with my hand multiple times. I figured it was corrosion in the drag system so I cleaned, greased, and oiled the whole reel. I do take care of the reels but I do put them to the test. if your hard core into fishing I would recommend going up to shimano. however this is a great reel for the average weekend warrior.

Fish with a friend that has 3 Penn Battles 200 and 300 Models got a chance to purchase new rod and reel went with the Penn Battle 300 and St. Croix 7'6"Mojo Inshore ML put the slick 30# braid on the battle, throw a 1/8 jig with soft plastic, with this set up I get excellent Distance very sensitive feel and great hook set. I've had the setup a month and have netted 2 reds over 30" 100 trout I would recommend, reel is real smooth and drag works great when fighting the reds from under docks and obstructions The Battle is offered at a great price point.

Rated 4 out of 5 by floridafishing1 great reel for the price
Hello I live in south Florida where we fish for everything from bass to shark's my go to reel for both fresh and salt water fishing is my stradic 4000fj but a friend bought the Penn battle 4000 and told me he loved it not being a Penn fan I told him I'd stick with my stradic after a few weeks I bought one and was very pleased for 100 it was worth the money now the retreave and smoothness is in my opinion no where near my stradic but to be fear my stradic is over twice the price of the battle cast wise again in my opinion it was right up there with my stradic so over all in its price range I give it a thumbs up 4 out of 5 Star I would definately buy another one thanks

After reading through some of the other reviews I would just like to share my experience with both the 5000 and the 8000 Penn Battles I have owned now for 2 seasons.
I fish here on St. Andrews Bay in Panama City and offshore in the Gulf of Mexico extensively. If I had to choose only 2 out of all the reels I have it would be the 5000 for inshore and the 8000 for offshore. The 5000 spooled with #30 Power Pro braid casts ridiculously far, has caught Redfish, Trout, Spanish Mackerel, Blues, flounder, and a few decent size Bonitos, sharks, and Kings. I also use it for chicken dolphin offshore and have also used it for Snook down in Stuart. The 8000 has brought in MANY large Kings while flat lining when fishing offshore and I have come to appreciate this reel having snatched some very large Gags, Red Grouper and Snapper off of the bottom with the 8000 (#60 Power Pro) as well....and any spinning reel that can wheel in a large Amberjack gets my endorsement, I also reeled in an 8 foot Bull shark with the 8000.
Although I am very careful about keeping salt and grime out of the reel, I am not easy on my equipment...these reels hold up. For the money, nothing comes close....The sound of the drags on these reels being tested is a beautiful thing to my ears. For the money you will not find a better reel in my humble opinion.
