Great Gear Our family has used Penn products for over 50 years, both personally and and on our charter boats. All these rods and reels have performed superbly. We have never broken a Penn rod with just a slight bending of the rod. We have landed several 300 bluefin tuna on rods only rated for line 30-80# test line. They stood up under the pressure. I recommend these rods and reels to anyone. June 22, 2011
Great Purchase I received this item as a gift from my wife on Christmas. I finally took it out today on a sports fishing boat out of Newport Beach, Ca. This combo is definitely worth every penny. I was easily able to feel every strike through the rod. Additionally, this thing reels as if it has a motor on the inside assisting you. I was able to circle hook some nice sized sheephead, rock fish, and perch. The sheephead were the largest but was no match for this combo. I have it spooled with 80lb. Braid, and it feels capable of bringing up a whale if necessary. If you are on the fence about purchasing the combo, just do it. This is an amazing piece of equipment. December 31, 2012
This combo is the real deal On Thursday Feb 18 I spent over two hours in the Manteeca, ca location looking for the perfect rod and reel. I looked at them all, researched them all and priced every setup you could imagine. I finally settled on the Penn Slammer combo with the 113h and the slammer rod strung with the Bass Pro Shops 40 pound mono. On Friday night at 11:23 I started fighting a 400 POUND sturgeon that was OVER 9ft long (yea baby) it took me an hour and fifteen minutes but I got him. The next day I caught a 4 pound cat fish (lol) I guess it works for those too. If you are looking for a great setup I strongly recommend this package. February 22, 2010
Another awesome penn combo This thing is just great. It is big enough to hold a lot of line, ( 50lbs suffix mono, w 50lbs seaguar fluoro leader) perfect set up i catch plenty of gags that are keepers, the rod can take the beating of the salt and wind, great from piers or out in the gulf/ocean. great strength, easy to use. I got the 6'6" slammer with the 4/0 113H 30-50lbs combo and its a little bulky at times but it gets the job done and thats what i want. It has great crank power, you dont have to play the fish out with this rod/reel just crank it in..it can take it. April 30, 2009

The difference between the rods are: the rod for the 113 combo is rated for 20-50 LB test line and the rod for the 114 combo if it is the SL3060 then the line rating is 30-60 LB test. There is also a SL3080 for the 114 and this rod has a line rating of 30-80LB test.

I have that combo and the Penn 330GT2 paired with the Uglystick 30 60lb. I use them both equally. The Slammer combo seems to be more sensitive but still very strong. It has the BPS 40lb line. I caught a 350 lb sturgeon in Feb 2010 on the slammer combo. Great gear.

YES, with braid coming out in force for the last few years I use 150 yards 0f 50lb test ANDE line for backing and 300 yards of 80LB test Power Pro braid for my top shot. If you are trolling these rods with this set-up use 25-30 ft of wind on leader. Size poundage of the leader depends on what you are fishing for. Here in the Northeast if you are trolling for stripers use 50-80 pound test leader since you will undoubtably trollind an umbrella rig. Glad to be of assistance

you can put heaver line but 50 or better the fish can see deff in clear water situations. the bigger the line the less u can put on ( for mono) if u get braid u can put a lot on cuz its smaller. U can put a bigger # of braid but it might surpass the rods capability, plus some braid will cut the level winds and the guides..i use a 113H/6'6" slammer 30-50lbs rod and i use 50# suffix with 50# seaguar leader good set up for this rod..hope this helps
