I use the 11 foot model for Texas Gulf coast fishing. I really like the feel, balance, and quality construction of this rod compared to some others I own. I have the rod matched with a Penn Fathom 25N and found that this combination performs best with braided lines due to the small (top quality) line guides. I am not a fan of braided lines at all, however, I spooled the reel with some the first time I used the setup. After the first bird's nest, I abruptly removed the braid and replaced it with a quality 20 lb. test copolymer line. The copolymer line doesn’t cast as far but it performs just fine for my needs. I use a 50 lb. test braid shock leader with a 3 - 4 oz weights and I’m getting a reasonable distance of about 100 – 120 yards. I have other 10 - 12 foot surf casting rods that casts farther but I love the feel and backbone of the Penn rod. I’ve only caught one decent size fish with the setup so far, a 6 - 7 pound gafftop sail catfish (very powerful, fun fish to catch). The thing is, I hardly felt any resistance while reeling it in--the rod barely flexed at all. I think this says a lot about the power and backbone of this rod and reel combination. Overall, the Penn 11 foot Torque rod and 25N with copolymer line will serve as my go-to setup whenever the bite is on.

Best Surf Rod Yet
I own a Loomis 11" and the Torgue 12' blows it away in distance. I have it combo'd it with the Penn 15 Squal. Using 65lb Magebraid with a 40lb top shot and 4oz spider weight. Getting around 140/150yds based on field practice walking the distance.

I just purchased this the 12' Penn Torque. I go surf fishing at Padre Island National Seashore and I must say of all the rods I have used over the years this rod was without a doubt the longest and confident cast. The length is perfect you'll still see the bites on the rod giving you time to react and set the hook. I coupled it with the new PENN SQL 15, 300yds of 30lb braided with 30ft 50lb mono shock liter. Distance varied 150yds -180yds. (15 mph winds coming back at me). Rig 4oz spider weight, 2 bait keeper hooks. Overall 6-8oz on cast. The grip is comfortable and the thin design makes it easy to really let loose and get some distance. Overall very satisfied.
