PENN® Spinfisher® V Live Liner Spinning Reels
I broke a Salt Striker reel during Tuna battle and HAD to buy new reel and picked one of these. The last days of the tournament were just off the hook with fish bite on. The American Spirit and crew put me some Tuna and Kings and this reel performed awesome. I really like that you can adjust the free live drag separate from fighting drag. As the other reels go bad I will be getting more of these as replacements. Very well built and not hard to clean up after trips.

I've had the 6500LL for several months now and not a single flaw. Everything is super smooth and reliable. I love this reel!

Another one out of the park for Penn!
I have been using the Spinfisher V series for over two years now and swear by them; I highly recommend them to my friends and co-workers. A few months ago I bought the 8500LL, my first live liner. I was nothing but impressed with it while surf fishing on a 12' Penn Prevail rod and landed some big Bull Reds and the occasional shark. I used the live liner occasionally but I didn't see much use for it for the style of fishing I was doing. This all changed when I booked a 30hr offshore trip...
The live liner is the only reel I will use for offshore fishing. Kingfish, warsaw grouper, red snapper, vermillion snapper, blackfin tuna, and of course yellowfin tuna were all caught using my 8500LL spooled up with 65# Power Pro. How was this so useful? When you are dropping, deep dropping, and jigging it is beneficial for you to let your line out fast but still maintain a degree of tension between your terminal tackle and your pole. With the live liner open and the drag adjusted for the jig or rig, you can let it drop, very quickly, at a controlled rate and if it gets pounded by a tuna, you won't miss the fish like you would on normal spinning reels because you're forced to have the bail open.
Let's talk about tough. My 8500LL, on an FTU rod, pulled a 30# warsaw up from 600 feet down. It also fought BFT and YFT for about nine hours, including a 25 minute fight with an 80# yellowfin.
Buy this reel. I don't know what happened to these other reviewers with damaged product and you always hate to see that from such a reputable name, but I have had no bad experiences with Penn gear. Again, if you're considering this reel or if you are looking for a bulletproof, waterproof, tough, solid, fish-wranglin' machine; you've found it.
