Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by great reel ok rod for $20 more these are great reels for the money. i fish out of a kayak and have caught a 32" redfish an a 4000 with no problems. The rods are way to heavy for my taste and the inshore fishing i do. i usually don't buy the combos because i dislike the rods, but for $20 more they are not a bad investment. I get the reel and spend $40 on a ugly stick. April 20, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great deal for the money I've landed everything from tiny yellowtail snapper too small to keep, to medium school sized mahi and even a few 12lb- 15lb grouper with fierce 3000 and 4000 combos purchased from BassPro. Are they the best reals in the history of the world?? I doubt it... But they work well for a wide range of salt/fresh water fish and they are cheap. I probably have 25 rods and reels for different fish at different depths and most are reasonably specialized and most are at least twice to three times the price. I've got heavy trollers, heavy spinners for jigging, fly rods, bait rods, bait runners for fishing live bait and so on, but short of going after tarpon, amber jacks, tuna and sailfish.. these will do the trick surprisingly well. I only bought these because I needed more yellow tail rods for myself and guests (I didn't want to worry about it too much if someone dropped an expensive rig overboard.. and I didn't want anyone to think I was going to keep all the good stuff for myself). While yellowtailing, we ran in to some grouper (all 4 of which were well above legal and all were landed after a decent fight)... we even caught a 41/2 foot baracudda who miraculously didn't cut the 17lbs mono leader and was landed/released successfully; needless to say, I quickly changed my mind about these and started using them much more often, leaving many of my specialized rigs at home. The results just speak for themselves. You would be reasonably hard pressed to find a more versatile rod and reel combo more suited to more Floridan game fish than these. It is fun catching grouper on light tackle, it's fun landing mahi on light tackle. It's fun going after mangrove snapper.. and sea trout, It is fun not having to crowd your boat with 50 rods.. and it is fun not missing big game fish because you only bought a small game setup. In other words for 70 or 80 buck you get a real fishing rod that you shouldn't have to worry too much about. While you can't catch everything with these... good luck with a big jack! You can catch most of the fish you are likely to target either in the back country or on the reefs. April 15, 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great combo Bought two of these combos to use at Oak Island, NC on last weeks vacation. Worked great all week fishing inshore and near offshore. Did all I expected, brought in lots of smaller saltwater fish. Only drawback is the method of folding the handle to travel, handle will almost fall off before it will fold completely. October 29, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by Cannot handle the stingray I purchased this rod because I have had good success with Penn. this is obviously their lower end product Ihad the rod snap the first time I used it and lost a nice striped bass. They replaced it and low and behold while fighting a stingray it snapped again. The real is great but the rod should not carry the PENN name September 8, 2013

This rod features one thing - stiffness. And no feel. OK, that's two things. Seriously this rod is way too stiff for feeling anything less than a boat hitting your lure.

As far as I know, the 4000 is not close to being a tarpon rig. It is much closer to being a big bass rod than a small tarpon rod. While you can put 30lb braid on it.. I would think 20lbs is more appropriate. I won't say you can't catch a tarpon with it.. I just wouldn't try.... you are way too likely to get stripped even with maxed out drag. I've been stripped with much bigger/better reels when hunting big tarpon.

I would go with the 5000 if you were to go with the 30 pound braid.

no it does not come with line but i would either reccomend berkley trilene 12 pound test, or that new berkley nanofilament, or braided line of your choice in poundage.

Bass Pro said they would put mono on it for free. I bought braid and they put it on for me instead. I heard the purchase is suppose to be over 100 for free line though. Not 100% sure on that and even if that is the case. I don't think they enforce that.
