PENN® Fathom™ Star Drag Conventional Reels
Do not buy Penn Fathon
We purchased 3 Penn Fathom 25 reels. We own several penn reels and felt anything penn was good. We fish natural bottom and get hung often. If you operate the spool release with any tension on the line you will break the eccentric in the reel making the reel useless. We have had two repaired, now the third is broken. We called penn. The tech said it is part of the design, you have to back up the spool a quarter of an inch before operating the spool release. When we tried to order parts, penn did not have them in stock. You could only get one at a time from a place in New Jersey. We will never buy another Penn reel. We do not fish often the other two have not been used since repair. We do not have this problem with the GTI 320, 345 or Shimano TLD.

Love this reel. Solid as a rock. I have the 2 FTH15's and a FTH12..All are used for surf and pier on my heavers. Casting is smooth and distance is great. Awesome drag. Get a couple!

Great reel. I purchased the 15 size and I couldn't be happier. I use it for bottom fishing live bait, but when I wanted to test it's castability, I was really impressed. It has amazing freespool for flylining live bait. It has an internal cast control which is also good to have. I paired it with an 8' Shimano Terez medium light action rod and it is honestly one of the lightest set ups I own. For the money, power, line capacity, and castability, PENN came through with a great line of reels here. I'll be buying a few more of these... I would hope that PENN will come out with interchangeable gear sets like the Torque does!

Not a lot of experience yet as I used this reel once since purchasing, but so far impressed. Paired with a trevala jigging rod for bottom fishing with 50 lb braid, it is the lightest set up I have used. It is extrememly strong for such a small lightweight reel. I really like the clicker on the star drag. It gives you much better drag control.
