Rated 1 out of 5 by Can't handle a 16 pound Barracuda!!! I was out on my first trip with this reel and hooked a 16 pound barracuda. After pulling it half way in, the reel made a weird sound and each time the barracuda made a run, the handle coiled in reverse, as if it were not locked in. I'm sending it back to Penn to see if the warranty covers. Good thing it wasn't the 60 pound wahoo I was looking to catch! I would have had a hard time pulling it in by hand. August 13, 2013
Rated 1 out of 5 by broke first use My son caught a stingray with the 40 lw ( fist fish caught with it). and there was a loud "POP" . The drag was set and the reel wouldnt stop reeling in reverse, maybe we just got a bad one , caught many stingrays on my 10+ year old 320gti and never have had a problem , think we will look for a different model Penn, than the defiance June 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by great reel this reel is amazing for the price, a true workhorse strong drag pulls in sharks like nothing November 28, 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by its a penn Great for a beginner like myself. Realized the difference in casting compared to a non level-wind. Still a nice reel! July 17, 2012

No, need a casting reel for the surf, not a conventional reel. Something like a penn torque star drag reel

Although I haven't attempted surf fishing with mine yet, I do plan to do so in the near future. I believe this reel will do very well for surf fishing. Just remember, if your going to do alot of surf fishing, the rod action and length is just as important as the type of reel.
