Equip malf On the 2nd time we used this reel its anti-reverse gear broke during a shark tourney, of course it happened right at the beginning, so the reel was useless all day. Iv'e had this reel about a year, only used it twice, the other time it pulled in about a 4 ft blacktip, I thought it did really well then. I was excited to use it in the tourney, oh well. Hope it's covered. Ive been seeing a few other reviews with the same issues. August 25, 2014
Love this reel I love this reel... I have pulled up huge amberjack, nurse shark, hammer heads, goliath grouper and this huge Red Snapper yesterday! I now own 4 of these reels and have not had a single problem with them. June 8, 2014
Look closely.... Good reels. A have two 40w. One is flawless. The above mentioned fails, I have found, have been caused by letting line out and then engaging the lever BEFORE the spool has stopped. I had to do a field repair on one and found the locking lever inside the reel had folded up. Easy repair. But should've happened on the first trip. They still fight well, just be carful on engagement of the spool. May 29, 2014
Can't handle a 16 pound Barracuda!!! I was out on my first trip with this reel and hooked a 16 pound barracuda. After pulling it half way in, the reel made a weird sound and each time the barracuda made a run, the handle coiled in reverse, as if it were not locked in. I'm sending it back to Penn to see if the warranty covers. Good thing it wasn't the 60 pound wahoo I was looking to catch! I would have had a hard time pulling it in by hand. August 13, 2013

No, need a casting reel for the surf, not a conventional reel. Something like a penn torque star drag reel

I'd choose a spinning reel for cast. These types of reels are used more for drop and trolling.

Although I haven't attempted surf fishing with mine yet, I do plan to do so in the near future. I believe this reel will do very well for surf fishing. Just remember, if your going to do alot of surf fishing, the rod action and length is just as important as the type of reel.
