The Offshore Angler Sea Lion Spinning Reels set an amazing benchmark for quality and value—compare these features! The gearbox rides on a 3-bearing system, backed up by our PowerLock™ instant anti-reverse, a rugged reinforced graphite frame and rotor, corrosion-resistant stainless steel components, smooth and reliable 6-disc drag system, and oversized line roller. Both the spool and the left/right fold-down handle are crafted of machined and anodized aluminum, for superior strength without added weight. All in all, our Sea Lion Spinning Reel is the tightest performance package available at anywhere near this price. Prototypes were tested on a wide range of species, from bull reds to sailfish, without a single malfunction. For all-around performance in any saltwater situation, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better-handling reel OR a better value -- in fact, you won't!

I attached this reel to a 7 foot rod and loaded it with 12lb test line. It was well balanced and I enjoyed fishing with it for trout and redfish. All day long the reel worked perfectly and handled well. Oh, yes we did catch fish.

Rated 3 out of 5 by ChristopherE heavy reel that locks up
I bought the SL70 to go on a 12ft surf rod with 20lb mono, at almost 30oz it is a very heavy reel for the size. Sometimes when casting the spool will lock up and the line wont go anywhere, it only takes a few minutes to take the spool off and fix but it happens atleast once every time out. For the price it is a good reel but I would recommend going with a smaller version or looking for a different reel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NJAngler26 Great reel for a great price!
I just purchased an SL40 to throw on one of my 7 foot casting rods to carry me through the rest of the season. I had it out for the first time this morning and I have to say I'm very impressed. The reel has a super smooth retrieve and casts very well. The drag is also very smooth and gives you a good amount of drag power. I pulled in a nice 14 pound bluefish and a short striper with this reel this morning with ease. I very well may be buying a couple more to use for inshore and bay fishing for back up rods. Definitely a great reel for an outstanding price. You can't beat it!

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE AND YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE IT, I WOULD RECOMMEND THE CATMAXX-70 SPINNING REEL. THAT REAL IS TOUGH FOR EXTREME HEAVY DUTY FISHING. I HAVE CAUGHT A 62INCH STUGEON ON THAT REEL AND HUGE STING RAYS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.
to find the the line capacity for a different pound test of a reel, multiply the pound test by the number of yards it will hold, then divide that by the pound test you want to use, this will give you the new yards for that pound test. for example: 12*200=2400, if i want to know how many yards of 15 pund test the sl50 will hold then i divide 2400 by 15=160 yds of 15.
