I have been dishing out a beating on this reel and it holds up. Smooth casting and reeling. Good size knob for surf casting in the cold North Atlantic. Basic "catch some dinner" type reel.

I ordered the Sea Lion Spinning Reel for a vacation trip. It was delivered promptly, but when I opened it, I found that the reel was larger than I had expected and therefore was not well balanced to the 7' Medium Duty rod that I was planning to use it with. I called Bass Pro Shop and decided to order the next smaller size; I later returned the larger reel for a refund. The smaller reel was delivered promptly - the day before I was leaving for my trip. The new reel is a good match to my rod and works very well - an excellent value. The negative is that I lost about $15 in the return process. I find it difficult to order the correct sizes of products by catalogue and will try to avoid doing so in the future. I wish there were a Bass Pro Shop closer to my home in Northeastern Ohio.

I puchased 2 SL70 model reels. It came as a rod and reel combo that were, I think, 79.99 or 89.99. I've used them to land a variety of saltwater fish. Most of which are 15-50lb Kingfish, Cobia, Grouper and Amberjack. Well, last year I took some friends down to Boca Grande, FL and we landed a 120lb tarpon aboard my boat "REEL DEAL." The rod and reel combo performed flawlessly under the extreme conditions and after a 45 minute fight the tarpon was caught and released! This is a great combo for the money and Tarpon beware, I'll be back in June!! Good luck fishing!

I would go with the SL40 but at biggest the SL50, if using from the pier you could probably get away with the SL60 if you want the extra line capacity.Details:

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR SOMETHING RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE AND YOU DONT ALREADY HAVE IT, I WOULD RECOMMEND THE CATMAXX-70 SPINNING REEL. THAT REAL IS TOUGH FOR EXTREME HEAVY DUTY FISHING. I HAVE CAUGHT A 62INCH STUGEON ON THAT REEL AND HUGE STING RAYS WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS.

to find the the line capacity for a different pound test of a reel, multiply the pound test by the number of yards it will hold, then divide that by the pound test you want to use, this will give you the new yards for that pound test. for example: 12*200=2400, if i want to know how many yards of 15 pund test the sl50 will hold then i divide 2400 by 15=160 yds of 15.
