I had one of these spinning rods (8-17) as well as a casting rod (10-20) and they were my favorite rods to surf fish with. Caught my first halibut (not legal though at 19") from the surf on the casting rod, and had lots of fun on the spinning rod. Very good action on the spinning rod but I didn't catch a whole lot on it either.
Unfortunately, both rods were stolen a couple years back right off my bike on the Catalina Flyer on the way back to Newport Beach over Memorial Day weekend. I didn't even notice until a few weeks later. I was really angry and upset. Dunno what I was thinking either - definitely not a good idea to leave the tube strapped to my bike, which was also out of my sight. But it's a shame how shady some people are (if you're reading this, I hope you catch nothing with them except trash bags, kelp, and maybe an old boot; not not even a boot!)
I got a good deal on these rods too (under $100 I think) when they were clearing them out back then. I still have a 12-25 casting rod but it doesn't see much action these days (and also misses its brothers).

Rated 5 out of 5 by Pablo58 Venezuela Payara fishing
I purchased 2 of these 3 piece travel rods to take fishing for Payara in Venezuela, not only were the rods easey to travel with and assemble, but were great for casting(spinning rods) and had the backbone for landing these hard fighting fishes. I had no problems with these rods and they felt like a one piece rod in everyway. My friend purchased two casting rods and was delighted with them. Both of us landed and released more then 120 payaras, in Venezuela's Paraqua River.
