The telescoping hook does not stay out that well. There seems to be some sort of mechanism where you twist after you pull it out but it does not hold.

Not up to the usual high Bass Pro standards that I am accustomed to. The item description doesn't tell you it's overall length...and this gaff is small (18" closed) and not particularly useful for my boat application. But even for surf/shore use, the wrist cord loop isn't big enough to fit even a medium - large hand and when this short gaff is extended (max only 27"), the shaft & 2 1/2" hook spin easily within the body/handle making it extremely difficult to gaff anything moving.
