The Mountain House product line of freeze-dried meals has been manufacturing backpacking / recreational foods since the late-1960s. Other brands of backpacking foods mix freeze dried and dehydrated ingredients in their entrees. Dehydrated ingredients cost less and do not have the superior flavor that freeze dried ingredients do. Dehydrated foods often require soaking and long cook times, while freeze dried entrees require only the addition of boiling water and a maximum set time of 10 minutes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mogman Mountain House is the good stuff. Mountain House is as good as you are going to find when it comes to freeze dried meals. Heat your water, add to the pack and wait a few minutes. Eating right out of the bag means easy clean up and fewer utensils / dishes to pack. If you have never eaten freeze dried foods, be prepared for the unique taste of some entrees. The vast majority of the Mountain House meals i've had are very tasty and satisfying, but slightly on the salty side (some more than others). The Breakfast / Egg entrees take a bit of getting used to, and I don't think any of the egg dishes from any manufacturer are perfect. You have to remove all preconceived notions about what eggs are supposed to taste like and enjoy it for what it is. The texture is what probably turns most people off, and it's kind of like eating a wet salty kitchen sponge. If you can live with eating freeze dried eggs, the Mountain House Breakfast entrees are hard to beat. January 26, 2011

After an afternoon of bikeing, dinner was simple, just heat the water pour it in and in 10 minutes we had dinner for 5. We split the larger portion bags. These would be good to have in a car with a bottle of water for a winter baeak down. or showshoeing, carzy light to carry. December 28, 2009
