MotorGuide® VariMAX® Hand Control Transom Mount Trolling Motors with BluVis™ Battery/Speed LED Indicators
I just bought the 45 lb MotorGuide Varimax trolling motor today. I never got to try it out. Following the instructions to install the prop, I tried to rotate the motor until the pin hole was horizontal. The shaft would not rotate in either direction. I put the pin in and managed to get the prop on. The motor will not move in the reverse direction at all, and when I apply considerable force in the forward direction, it barely budges, while making crunching metallic noises. This thing is either VERY defective, or it has been previously used in salt water. Needless to say, I'm extremely ticked off. I'm bringing it back tomorrow. I don't think I'll be walking out with another one of these.

Wow. Astonished at the bad reviews. I've got a 75lb thrust for my boat and 45lb thrust for canoe(when I use it. The 75 lb gets weekly use. I've had it for 3 years, and have had only 1 problem. If you try to jerk it into reverse quickly, the handle may come off. It's easy to put back on though. Besides that, it runs great. I LOVE the variable speeds instead of 5 forward(where it seems you've either got to much power or not enough). I would definitely get another one.

I have been using trolling motors for 45 years. I've owned my Motorguide Vari-max for over 3 years and this is BY FAR the worst trolling motor I have ever bought. In the hot sun it will come on by itself, either while fishing or sitting on the trailer. The 'innovative' push/pull forward/reverse switch will change directions when you only want to turn. I see that they finally changed the tilt assembly, you have to reach over the side of the boat and beat on mine to get it to tilt. I was actually relieved that it finally quit working altogether, now I can buy a new one, but not one of these.

varimax is junk
Both my brother owned one of these models. Both failed within one year. both my brother and I were under warrenty so we had new boards installed. The motors failed again within one year so we junked them and switched to another brand. my brothers friend also bought one of these and was not so lucky as he was over the one year warrenty. the last time out my brother who is a diabetic was alone and had to row back in with his blood sugar lowering. He barely made it back. All three of us will not buy motorguide again. absolute junk!!!!
