Mossberg builds a lot of versitility into their guns. They offer an optional barrel that converts this hunting shotgun into a home defense model with the shortest legal barrel length allowed. That way you get the advantages of their excellent action shotgun in the field, but still have the ability to have a shorter barrel version needed in home hallways etc. Hopefully we will never need to use it for that purpose, but if I ever need a weapon in the house, the thought of having a 5 shot pump action is a lot more practical than a pistol.
