A mossberg 500 can shoot bird-shot. If you are using a rifled barrel, do not under any circumstances fire bird-shot. If it is a smooth bore slug barrel, you still don't want to fire shot, it is too constricted, a shell barrel is a larger diameter than a slug barrel, firing shot through it will cause a catastrophic failure in the gun and you will potentially be killed. It is recommended that you invest in a 28 or 26 inch field barrel for your gun.1 of 1
