Rated 1 out of 5 by Mossvberg 500 Combo I purchased this gun at Bass Pro in Gurnee, Illinois last year. The one I Purchased has the raised cheek piece which can be changed out and it has the Catiliver scope mount on it's slug barrel instead of the rifled sights. I thought it looked good in the ad so I paid in advance and ordered it. When it came in and I got it home I was disappointed. The foregrip is sloppy and the wood dowel that limits shots rattles in the magazine as well. Also the safety as well as the trigger guard is plastic. Mine when I got it had to go back for repairs. The foregrip had a 4 inch crack in it and the trigger guard had a piece broken out of it. So much for Mossberg's quality control. It took three weeks for me to get it repaired by Mossberg. This meant a total loss for the hunting season. I went though Brownell's and bought a metal trigger assembly as well as safety when I read blogs about the safety on the Mossberg's failing. I replaced them at a cost of an additional $125 myself. The foregrip that Mossberg sent me it back with was stained a different color so I had to mail it back again. The second time it was repaired right but they commented that I had voided my warranty by replacing the plastic with metal parts. If you buy one you will find out real quick that you will not need to care a deer rattle the gun is one. I wish I had never bought mine the best part of the gun is the NIkon 2x7 scope I put on it. I would not recommend this gun and I will never waste my cash on another one. August 12, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Just a good old Mossberg Granted this gun is new, but, this is a great shotgun, Mossberg has, once again, not let me down. It is a very well built, rugged field shotgun with an excellent finish with exceptional functionality. Though personally, I expect nothing less from Mossberg. This is my second model 500. The first of which had over 100,000 rounds blown through it before it broke and it was built in 1966. By the end, it could only be fired as a single shot, I had worn the shell holders in the magazine to the point of being completely rounded so that they would no longer hold shells in the magazine. If this one lasts even half of that, I will be a very happy man. You can't go wrong with a good old mossberg shotgun. April 10, 2012

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mossberg 500 This is my first shotgun and I'm very glad I bought it. I use it for turkey and grouse hunting and love it. I put a red dot scope on it for turkey hunting with and after market x full choke and have no plans of getting another turkey gun. I put the camo tape on it and it looks great. February 5, 2011

vented rib barrel is the shot barrel for your bird shot to buck shot its the smooth bore barrel the only reason they say vented rib is the rib is a strip of metal on the top where your beads are to help protect the barrel from exploding and they cut gap in it to cool the barrel faster which is why its vented. the other barrel is your rifled slug barrel it is the one with the iron sights. do not fire anything but slugs through that barrel it is used for deer and other game such as that. the other one you can use for birds with shotshells. this gun will definitely fit what you need

A:
It depend on what kind of slugs you are using and what kind of choke your barrel has, it has to be a fixed modified or less to fire a slug. This is due to the fact that a fixed modified choke has a bore diameter of .720" at the end and a foster slug. More commonly known as a rifled slug ( NOT SABOT SLUGS). In reality the sabot slugs would not harm the gun, they just wouldn't be accurate at all because they can't be spun around in a smooth bore barrel. A foster (rifled) slug has rifling on the slug itself allowing for the wind to stabilize the slug down range. The original slug barrels were smooth bore at .725", which is the diameter of a rifled slug. If you have interchangeable chokes, don't fire a rifled slug, you'll only accomplish blowing your gun up in your face.

In my personal opinion, this is an excellent shotgun for slugs, it is exceptionally accurate and dependable. It is a Mossberg, which is personally one of my favorite shotguns.

Don't be fooled by the Remington followers. I have owned a Mossberg 500 for 40 years and it is great. It has never failed me. I just bought a 20 ga for mi wife. The Mossberg has better features than the Remington. The safety is located better and the slide release is also located better. Much easier to locate the safety when a bird takes off on the Mossberg than the Remington!

I have owned a Mossberg 500 for 40 years and I just bought another for my wife. They are a well made shotgun at this pricepoint. The Remington is also a good shotgun but I feel the Mossberg has better features! I have used mine for both slugs and shot and in 40 years it has never failed me!

I have owned many guns in my life and bought my first mossberg last year, it is the WORST gun I have ever owned. Buy a Remington, best gun for the money! If not, remember, you get what you pay for in guns!
