Rated 5 out of 5 by Great value in high priced world I usually dont write reviews but in this case for this shotgun I owe it. In a world of many shotgun choices with many shotgun prices, price does not always dictate dependability. Case in point, I stumbled across this gun as a emergency back up to a very expensive shotgun I purchased last year. After a scheduled hunt and 2 shells into it it failed in the field. To add insult to injury, upon returning for warranty not only did I loose my hunt but i lost my new gun for 6 months to repair! Really? What's a hunter to do? So disgruntled I set out to find a new hunting friend and I bought this one Mossberg 500 Waterfowl 12G pump Made In USA and let me say...Mossberg to the rescue....it's Accurate, reliable, dependable, lightweight, accurate, awesomely priced, accurate, 1000 rounds into it and not one failure or issues and accurate as a mallard duck on its way to splashdown. No FTF or FTE. Buy it! Enough said? Did I mention it was reliable and great price? If not...you get my drift Whenever my other overpriced shotgun returns it will ultimately go on the inactive roster only to hunt second fiddle to the Mossberg 500..an accurate, dependable and well priced shotgun. Im a hunter and without a quality gun im not hunting. This and your bird dog are all you need. January 31, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Mossberg 500 Have had this shotgun for a couple months now have shot many bullets out of it with no jams or nothing going wrong, it is accurate and a great gun for the money. October 24, 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Sorry start I bought this gun for my grandson, an avid waterfowl hunter..After initial cleaning the first shot jammed the gun so bad we were hardly able to eject the spent shell casing., After another cleaning the second shot jammed like the first. Gun is inroute to factory for repair or replacement.. Think before you consider this shotgun. This is a entry level priced gun, but expected more than the gun delivered. June 17, 2013

Yes it will, but smoothbores aren't as accurate with slugs as a rifled barrel. I personally wouldn't recommend buckshot, as it tends to simply injury a deer rather than kill it cleanly. If you shoot slugs, I recommend the Federal TruBall slugs because they are designed for smoothbores. You'd probably be better off buying the combo that has a smoothbore barrel AND a rifled slug barrel.

You can shoot slugs with this gun. I do not reccomend it! Mossberg 500's are ok as long as you are just shooting light game loads. I have seen many of them foul the extractor in the field shooting larger magnum loads and slugs just because of the cheap manufacturing of the gun. I would personally recomend upgrading to the 835 model which is made to take the large magnum loads and I would also reccomend that you purchase a slug barrell which will allow you greater accuracy and distance.
