Good for small fish I've used this electric knife for many years, having 3 of them in my possession. The reason I have to have so many is that while cleaning saltwater fish, they always break the plastic gear that runs the blades. I used to buy the replacement gear from Mister Twister and replaced it myself, but recently, the new model design won't allow you to do that. Therefore, I'm looking for another brand that's built sturdy enough to clean redfish on a consistent basis. Don't be suckered into the Pirhana sales tactic about being stronger....it has the same internal plastic gear that drives the blades. The knives are only as strong as the plastic gear inside. If I only used them on small fish, or specked trout, it would otherwise be fine. Choose carefully. November 19, 2006
Best Fillet Knife Ever This is just an all around excellent knife. The 9" blades that you can buy for it really make it easy to get the perfect fillet off a fish, without all the struggle of making sure you are flush against the skin. I have used it on bass, walleye and northern, and all of my fillets have been near perfect every time. The time saved is also a great incentive to add this fillet knife to your gear for your next trip. July 11, 2006
Bargain Price It works well, and cleans fish in no time, but the dependability of this product is an issue. One of my best days fishing was topped of by one of my worst evenings of cleaning fish. I have used, and returned, this product more than once. March 22, 2008
clean twice as fast First time I used it I cleaned perch in half the time. If you fish you should own one. July 16, 2006

It takes a small ceramic sharpener and the blades need to be lined up and clamped together as you pull them thru the ceramics.

I suspose that some type sharpener may apply to the blades, however they last a long time and when they get dull,I simply buy new blades.

Sharpening is not recommended. I can't imagine the blades getting too dull to filet fish, but if they do, replacement blades are very inexpensive.

A:
No, they don't need sharpened. I cleaned well over 5,000 fish on one, and probably closer to 10,000. The rivets on the blade were worn and I did not know they offered replacement blades or I would have puchased one. Simply order a replacement blade after 5,000 fish. Your rivets will proably be worn any way.

Buy it you will love it and save yourself a ton of time cleaning fish!
