Finally upgraded from my old 46lb thrust to a 70lb Maxxum. Quiet running, comfortable pedal, easy steering, and I like the variable speed.

Maxxum 80 - Nearly flawless running for 14 years. I once lost a nut that came loose. I then replaced it with one that was similar to the one lost until I could go over to the local minn kota guy. That is all the problems I have had with this motor. The metal parts have some corrosion due to brackish water but it shows how long i have had this machine. I have torchered this motor in the Delta, California. I keep thinking that it is going to have to break sooner or later but it's like the energizer rabbit and I am very glad about it! Buy Minn Kota, they are the leaders in regards to quality and longevity.

I've had the Maxxum 55 variable for a season now and it performed great all year. I was used to 24 volt systems and 70 lb thrust on 16 foot aluminum fishing boats. This 55 did a good job with my used 14.5' aluminum with a 40 horse johnson on the transom. I like the cable/direct connect over the power drive, I feel I have better and instant control. Plus I'm used to it. The variable speed is great because the amount of thrust can be fine tuned infinitely (almost) you're not locked in to a preset amount of thrust. The foot control shape is good too with the on/off control easily reached with the big toe area. I'm happy. I added a 2nd battery dedicated to my new side imaging Humminbird sonar so I linked it to a switch so I could change to it late in the day as a back up for the trolling motor. It doesn't interfere with the sonar either. I get most of the day out of one battery with this Maxxum 55 but it's nice to have the 2nd one for that last evening bite.

I have had both Motorguide and Minkota. My motors take a beating. I have 2 bass boats. I have had Minkota and Motorguide on both and I have to say I am rough on them as there is nowhere I won't fish. Weeds, stumpfields, and rocks. There is no comparrision between the two when you're burried in the weeds or in the middle of a stumpfield. The power and ability of this motor to cut through lilly pads is awsome. The lighted directional arrow is priceless for night fishing and my batteries last much longer than with a Motorguide. The large foot peddle is great in the dark. I recommend this motor all day.

It should not cause any electonic interference. However, if it does it might be from the battery for the trolling motor and sonar unit. Here is what I found online: The solution in my casewhere there are two 12 volt batterys and the change to 24 volt occurs at the
plug in and NOT AT THE BATTERIES is to run a light 14-18ga wire from each of the negitive termals on your trolling motor batteries to your negitive termanal of your starting battery. Fuse each wire with 2-3 amp fuse. I hope this helps. Thanks

Variable speed allows you to adjust the speed from 0 to 100 percent vice having just five speeds. It allows you to go super slow or full speed. It's like a dimmer switch on your lights in your home.

Variable speed could be compared to a rotary dimmer switch you may have on the wall in your house; a smooth turning wheel in the foot pedal without definite "clicks". Non-variable is normally a 5 set speed motor with a set point for each speed or 5 "clicks". Minn Kota also incorporates the Maximizer into the variable speed units which is supposed to prolong battery life by pulsing power to the motor. I believe the non-variable units do not have the maximizer and the soft start feature.Details:Â
Does the soft start feature of the Maximizer hinder blowing weeds and grass off the prop? I can see drifting into some green stuff and when you hit the pedal to move, there isn't enough spin to get the grass to fly off. I've heard this mentioned as an issue but don't know if it's true...Answers

Yes it does hinder your escape if you are fishing in vegetation such as lilly pads. I have been fishing the maxxum series for years and the only advantage i have found was the extended battery use. I have already replaced one of my minn kotas and will replace another one this spring. hope this helpsDetails:Â

depends on the length you have to pull. in most applications #10(multi strand) will suffice. with a motor that is 12/24 you will need three strands and with a straight 24 and 2 strand #10 is all you will need. always remember that DC current requires heavier conductors than AC current.A:Â
Some 24V systems use a three wire if the motor is designed to be either 12V or 24V otherwise the 24V is usually a two wire. You should be considering a heavier gauge than 12 or 14 even though you actually have a lower amperage load with the 24V than the 12V. Ohms law is relative here with the lower amperage as well as the line drop in voltage you will have coming from the batteries to the motor which at times could be near 19 - 20 feet depending on the boat. Many rigs see at least 8 ga. or 6 ga. to compensate for the line drop which should not exceed 5% in voltage to the motorAnswers

Yes. On mine it's a toggle switch on the left side of the control. Has to be changed by hand. Constant turns the motor on but you still can control the speed with the dial on the footpad. Manual allows on and off as you press the button on the footpad at whatever speed is set on the dial.A:Â
