What a great anchor winch! I saw the one other review that was negative and just had to write this to let everyone know that this is a great winch. I've had mine on the bow of my 17' Tracker TX for 2 months now, and I love it. The winch works great and I've had no problems with it at all. When you're ready to anchor, just hit the button and the anchor automatically deploys. When the anchor hits the bottom, the winch will automatically stop, but will sense tension and automatically feed line out until you're satisfied with your set, then you flip the switch to the off position and it will automatically lock. When you're ready to stow, hit the switch and the winch line is stowed very rapidly. This has to be my favorite item on my boat now. You will want to remove about 20' of line from the spool before your tie on your anchor because the spool doesn't hold all the line very well. If you remove 20' of line you will have no problems. Use a 15-20 pound river anchor. Fish on! August 14, 2009
great value i have purchased the less exspensive trac mates and there is no comparison. minnkota is the only way to go. minnkotta has a clutch system for deployment of anchor. which means that when you release the anchor and it hits the bottom the line stops. with the trac system it keeps unwinding and if you are not watching it it can birdsnest on you. plus the tracs have problems removing the cover for instalation screws are rusted and strip when you try to remove or you break the cover minn kotta is the only way to go October 28, 2010
Suprisingly nice product I was a little worried about the quality it didn't look as robust as I would like. This is my second year with this product. It gets lots of use on my boat. I use a 20 lb. river anchor and it has operated great. It has great power and torque. Simple to operate. Looking to get one for the back of the boat with remote switch. It has turned me into the lazy fisherman. I never have to get out of my seat. I can't think of any problems I have ever had with this unit. May 17, 2010
A Little Less Line The deck hand has worked OK but I have had some issues with the spool of line. Since there is nothing to distribute the line evenly when you are retrieving your anchor, the line has a tendency to jump off the spool and wrap around the motor shaft tripping the motor out. After tearing it apart 3 times to fix it, I ended up cutting about 15 foot of line off so the spool wasn't so full. Seems to be OK so far. August 26, 2014

No, all of the DeckHands are intended for use in freshwater only and will void the warranty.

For a Pontoon Boat try item number 38-527-672-00, not this model.

Thanks

What type of anchor would I need to use with a 16' boat with mostly sandy bottom shallow lakes? Do you have to stow the anchor once its retrieved? I've seen people use these and once its retrieved they just drive away, yet I didn't see a 'normal' anchor at the end of it.

I use a 20 lb mushroom anchor on the river with a 16 ft bass boat and have no problems holding in place. In a lake with a sandy bottom, a 15 lb anchor should work just fine.

For a Sandy Bottom try the Fortress Marine Anchors item number 38-510-318-00. http://www.fortressanchors.com/AnchorTestSand.html

When ready to retrieve push up until anchor is back in place and insert the locking pin and you are ready to go!

I have read the reviews on these products and it seems this DH25 is the best model. I am concerned about the one made for a pontoon, no good reviews there so will this one work on my pontoon?

I see no reason it would not word on your pontoon there would not be that mush more drag than on a bassboat. I dropped anchor in very swift water with a 15# anchor and it helt fine

I have no doubt it will work. It has an automatic stall which senses when the boat is up to the bow stop. You may have to activate the winch several times if the stall switch kicks in, but it is an instant reset and does not slow down the overall function of the unit.
