I purchase a MSR about 20 years ago and only use regular gasoline, since it is easily available. This stove is lightweight, compact and heats up quickly, which makes it ideal for backpacking. The only downside is that my older version is noisy. This doesn't bother me.I see the new version is called WhisperLite they may have developed it further to make it quiet.

Excellent choice for those looking for a light weight stove that is very effective. MSR has all of the accessories to make boiling water in the wild as easy as possible. The fuel bottles come in various sizes, but the 20oz bottle would last at least 2-3 days using it every meal to boil water. I love this stove and am confident that just about everything on it is durable enough or easily replacable if need be. Check out the msr alpine pots, heat exchanger, and trillium base for a complete setup.
The white gas fuel is simply coleman camping fuel. You can find MSR fuel but it is less available. I haven't tried kerosene or unleaded gasoline but I wouldn't unless I had to. Doesn't burn as hot as white gas anyhow. Though I'll admit this was a reason I bought this stove over the regular whisperlite. Good to have options.
