"CRIPPLED HERRING" FOR LARGE & SMALL MOUTH BASS PROS, DON IOVINO AND KEVIN VAN DAM, CLAIM THE CRIPPLED HERRING SPOON TO BE THEIR #1 JIGGING SPOON. I THINK THE NATURAL APPEARANCE ADDS TO ITS DEADLY EFFECTIVENESS AS A DEEP WATER JIGGING LURE. THE 3/4 OZ CHROME AND PEARL WHITE CRIPPLED HERRINGS HAVE BEEN USED IN EASTERN LAKE ERIE (35-55 FT DEPTHS) WITH GREAT SUCCESS FOR SMALLMOUTH BASS. VERTICAL JIGGING THE 3/4 & 1 OZ PEARL WHITE 'HERRINGS HAVE BEEN AWESOME FOR DEEPWATER LARGEMOUTH BASS, ESPECIALLY OFF DEEP CHANNEL EDGES. VERY EFFECTIVE WHEN THE BASS GO DEEP WHEN THE SUMMER IS HOT AND CONVERSELY WHEN THE WATER GETS COLD. ALSO A GREAT STRIPED BASS LURE. A 55 LB STRIPER WAS CAUGHT ON A LARGER CRIPPLED HERRING IN LAKE CUMBERLAND IN THE MID-90'S. August 1, 2007
runner-up next to the hopkins spoons, these are super fish catchers. stripers will not leave the white ones alone. smallies seem to like the white as well. maybe white is easier to see in deeper water. i have more success in fish landed using the single hook model also they snag less. i also use these for a casting spoon for schooling fish. when bass are feeding on shad the silver/blue is the ticket especially in clear water. using florocarbon line really aids in the hook-up ratio. 20# test and up is essential for stripers. keep your hook sharpener close by, your going to need it----------- August 25, 2007
Crippled Herring I noticed that your 3/4 oz chrome Crippled Herring was sold out and presently on backorder. Apparently, other informed anglers have had similar success with this lure. From personal experiences, I can fish the Crippled Herring anywhere and be very successful in fresh and salt water environments...from amberjack to walleye. The 3/4 oz Crippled Herring is deadly when casting to Spanish mackerel or vertical jigging to snapper and grouper in Florida. This same lure also has been very effective for daytime snook while vertical jigging the deeper holes around bridges, docks and piers. It's important to keep your single hook sharp and read the Crippled Herring tech sheet available on the internet for proven tips. This lure should be in every serious angler's tackle box. Smaller profile spoon One of the most important things is simply matching the hatch. The crippled herring spoon in the 1/2 oz size is fairly compact and good for getting down to 60 ft or so when the fish are hitting smaller baitfish. Personally I like the chrome one and I will had a stripe of black down the back with a paint brush. Not sure if it really helps or its just my confidence. I've also changed out the hooks on them to an owner treble. The ones they give bend pretty easily. February 2, 2009
