Enjoy the visibility of an advanced illuminated reticle paired with superior Leupold® optics in the Leupold VX-R™ Rifle Scope with FireDot™ Reticle. Motion Sensor Technology (MST™) activates the scope's illuminated FireDot reticle from ''stand-by'' mode whenever the rifle is moved, eliminating the extra movement required to manually activate other illuminated reticles. The VX-R scopes provide the enhanced light transmission, resolution, and color fidelity of Leupold's Quantum Optical System™ for razor sharp imaging across the typical light conditions experienced on any hunt. Index Matched lenses pair superior lead-free glass with individual, specialized coatings based on the lens' location and purpose for optimized brightness and sharp resolution across the entire visual field. DiamondCoat 2™ lens coatings on the exterior lenses boost light transmission and unsurpassed durability and abrasion resistance that exceeds military standards. Blackened lens edges reduce unwanted glare to provide better resolution and contrast for superior optical performance. Second generation argon/krypton waterproofing in the 30 mm maintube ensures waterproof and fogproof reliability in the field. 3:1 zoom ratio and tactile power selector. 1/4 MOA finger click elevation and windage adjustment. Twin Bias Spring Erector System for repeatable performance shot after shot after shot.

  • State of the art reticle illumination with state of the art optics
  • Quantum Optical System - razor sharp imaging across the typical hunting light conditions
  • Index Matched Lens System - individually coated lead-free glass lenses

bad design I liked the fire dot reticle concept. Gives you a better focal point when aiming. I like how you can adjust the brightness of the dot or make it an intermittent flash. The bad about this scope is the design for the battery. When you place the battery on the left side of the scope it is hard to put the cap back on, resulting in the battery popping out, or breaking the little metal clips inside where the battery goes in. Once the battery is in if it's not in correctly the fire dot won't light up. This leaves you frustrated, and without a scope. November 14, 2011
I love it In early November I put the 2-7x33 VX-R with the FireDot reticle on my carry-all-day, shoot-in-an-instant big woods tracking and still-hunting rifle. It is the first scope I've used with an electronic sight and a 30 mm main tube, and to say I am happy with it a month later would be an understatement. Its red dot and wide field of view make it ideal for quick, close shots, yet at 7X I can still shoot accurately across the biggest clear cuts. It is also one of the brightest scopes I've ever used. It is easily bright enough for dawn and dusk shots in the thick softwoods we often encounter in northern New England. How Leupold managed to pack so many features into a scope that weighs only 12.7 ounces I'll never know, but that's why I buy Leupold. Plus, it's designed and made in the USA. I love it. Great Scope I have the VXR 4-12 CDS and the fire dot reticle lights up every time I pick the rifle up.I have compared this scope to other scopes that I have that cost three times as much at dusk and I can not tell the difference in clarity and light transmission. December 3, 2011
Leupold VXR 4-12 40mm CDS AWESOME My third Leupold scope. I have had two VX3 in the past and I have used the VXR for about three weeks now. I am very impressed with the quality of the VXR scope. I have used the scope on my FNAR to shoot about 12-13 hogs so far and it is awesome. The low light visility is excellent and the red dot stands out on the black of the hogs in extremely low light conditions. In fact you are able to shoot hogs well after legal shooting hours in Florida. You must be careful about clock watching so you don't hunt past shooting hours. July 19, 2012

Details:
I am considering putting a low power variable scope on a Springfield Armory M1A (Loaded) model rifle. One of the scopes that I am considering is the Leupold VX•R 1.25-4x20mm or maybe the same scope in the 2X - 7X power. I want a low powered variable magnification scope for quick target acquisition at short distances. I want the advantage of the magnification for somewhat longer distances out to possibly 300 yards. For all practical purposes my long distance shots should average approximately 150 yards. I know that my rifle is capable of shots at much greater distances, however, I do some hunting in swamps and heavy brush areas and there is no need for a high powered scope. I also see it as possibly being a home defense weapon. Is this scope durable and reliable enough to handle the stress from being used with this rifle such as recoil generated from a 7.62x51mm/.308 bullet? Can this scope handle the abuse that it might be subjected to(everything from hunting in swamps to shooting at a gun range)? Also, which reticle would you recommend? Thank you for your time and assistance with this.

For the stated purpose, that would be a great solution. No issue with recoil from .308 up to .375 H&H Mag. Thank You!

It appears to be noiceably better than the VX3's, but I have two older model VX3's. Leupold Tech support is excellent and you could find out more about the specifics from them

I have several VX3s and Mark 4s. I am a long range target shooter and varmit hunter and I think the glass is as good as the VX3 and Mark 4

Yes. It can be quickly adjusted up and down in intensity by pushing in the click-indent on the left (battery) turret. I've hunted with my VX-R for a month now with no issues whatsoever.

Yes it has a number of different adjustable settings for brightness and remembers the last setting you used and begins at that setting the next time you use the scope.

My scope has 8 intensity settings and when you pick the rifle up it comes on on the last setting you left it on

I found the answer to my own question. Apparently, this scope has 8 levels of brightness for the firedot. I am concerned about this because I haven't heard great reviews from my friends that have non-adjustable lighted reticles. The reticles get so bright that you can't see your target in low light. I might have to give this a try.

Yes, I think that is what the reticle is for all the CDS scopes. You can get other reticles, but right now the CDS only comes with the firedot duplex. Awesome and amazing scope
