My teenage son bought this item for use with his chocolate labrador retriever. The dog stays in a kennel, but when let out, he would often want to explore past our 1/2 acre backyard. Installation of the wire took a long time and we had to purchase an additional 500 ft roll. Altogether, it took about 650 feet of wire. We used an edger to cut a shallow trench, about an inch deep, and then covered the wire with dirt. We mounted the control box in the garage, ran the wires through a hole we drilled, and then circled the house and our backyard. All told, it took us about 9 hours to install everything. The white flags were placed about two feet from the wire, right where the collar would begin to emit a warning tone. My son took the dog to the flags on a leash and when the dog got close, he pulled him back and gave a stern "No". After a couple days of this we turned the dog loose. When the dog got close to the flags we shouted "No" to him and like most lab puppies, he did not listen. When he crossed the line he got shocked, yelped his displeasure, and retreated inside the yard. The following day he did the same and received the same. That is all it took. He will not go near the fence line and can now be left in the backyard unsupervised. We have the field width on the control box set to a minimum level and have not had any interference from any electrical items in the house and the fence has not caused any electrical issues within the house. When using the remote trainer, the remote must be programmed to the collar each time. Buttons have to be pressed and held, beeps must be heard, then you line the two up and look for flashing lights. Too complicated to do each time. The remote has four levels of stimulation and the first two are useless. It took level 3 before the lab showed a response and level 4 before his attention could be gotten. We have not yet had an issue with batteries and have been using the system for two months now. We bought the Contain'N'Train system because their company is the only one that has underground fencing and a shock collar training option all in one. It is reasonably priced and seems to be made very well. I actually called Innotek to compare this product with their UltraSmart Contain'N'Train system. The person I spoke with recommended the basic system and said the collar was more durable than the UltraSmart collar. The Basic Contain'N'Train system does not have rechargeable batteries or status lights, but it is a good system and it does what it says. Can't ask for more than that.
