The Icom America 6-Watt VHF Hand-Held Marine Transceiver has been tested to survive submersion in 1.5m of water for 30 minutes. A high-intensity LCD offers a wide viewing angle and bright, easy-to-read characters. For night time operation there is bright LCD back-lighting and a back-lit keypad.

Sorry about the late reply. Judging radio horizon can be a complicated process. VHF FM handheld marine radios such as these with a 5 or 6 watt strength generally have a 4 to 5 nautical mile range. But truly radio distance has to do with the transmitting antennas height above the earth or in this case the water. They are line of sight, the less obstructions the better chance of it gaining a good distance, but you are also dealing with curvature of the earth itself. These make a good inland/inshore form of communications or a back up to a more powerful mounted unit. Thanks for the questions and come see us at Bass Pro Shops Orlando!
