I own a 998 HD SI combo and tried to buy another one for the front of the boat however I was informed that Humminbird no longer made this unit and that the 999 HD SI combo was a direct replacement. I bought the 999 HD SI combo and it is far inferior to the 998. I have them running side by side and the 999 does not identify the targets on side or bottom near as good as the 998. It seems like the two transducers are from two different worlds. No adjustments corrects the problems. I have owned several Humminbirds but I would not recommend this unit. Also, to much screen is used with big numbers and letters that most fishermen don't use. I like all the viewing area I can get.

I got this unit February 25 2014 and it seemed to work good, but when I went to the DI feature such as DI enhance and then go to sharpness, low, med or high my unit shows nothing but white lines on the unit!!! So I contact Hummingbird 5 times and got new software updates after the 3rd time and not as bad but the lines are still there!! So I send the unit back at the tune of $36.00 with ins. and the unit was not saving GPS tracks, even though it said it was, a whole another story!! So lets get to the point witch is that they sent me back the unit with a NOTE: SAYING: TECH comments:(housing/control head , 12z- Other , NO PROBLEM FOUND ) The DI issue is a known SOFTWARE PROBLEM and will be addressed with a software update at a later date. no other issues were fou. and that's just what I got for $1567 with 2 year warranty.
