I bought my 998 C Si from Bass Pro in Charlotte. I am a nerd of sorts but I love electronics. This GPS\side scan is the coolest thing I have ever owned for a boat. It is wonderfully made and works as advertised. I recently went fishing at night and the GPS got me home in record time knowing where I was. The Side Scan sonar is so amazing, i have not been catching my share of fish because I would rather study the bottom of my lake than fish. But its all good right? If you can afford one of these buy it. If you cant then go get a second job and buy it anyway. I cant say enough about how much more you know once you have one of these. We fish 2 days a week and it really makes a difference. I wanted the larger 1198 but it was not in stock. I like the size of the 998 as I can see the display good enough and its not too large like the 1198 would have been. so I if you are wondering, get a 998

Modern fishing has made fishfinders practically a essential tool. This thing can do it all. On my boat I have a 788c Di HD ethernet linked to my 998c Si at the console. The 998 has the Navionics platinum map, and the 788 has the hotmaps. This thing can show so much detail and save a lot of time. Go into side imaging and see what you like, move your cursor over to it and hit mark. It's instantly on both of my units and I drop the trolling motor and start fishing it. Worth every penny

I received a CD but no manual. The CD only shows you the very basics. I need the manual in order to fully understand how to use this product. Please send manual or instruct me where to send product for reimbursement. Thanks.

My son and I could not be happier with the quality and performance of this device and the 597ci HD DI combo. The BPS staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. The images and info are giving us the confidence to trust our instincts and hardware for the first time compared to another manfacturer. Humminbird is the best and we did our research before buying.

Has anyone tried running this unit and another unit at the same time, interference problems?
Details:Â
I have a brand new HDS 5 that I was thinking to use for the GPS and run full screen sonar with the 998C SI for side and down scan. may have to disconnect the HDS transducer on the back of the unit to prevent interference to the 998C sonar. Any thoughts?Answers

I have a 998 on a RAM mount and two 788ci's - one in the front and one in the console. I use 998 for navigating (have Navionics chip in it) and for SI/DI. I use the 788 in the console for running full out and the one in the front while I am trolling. I generally use different transducer settings and have not noticed any problem with interference. I don't know why one would want to use two different units for the same thing simultaneously.I was not all that impressed with the 998 until I installed new software a few months ago. It was like the first time I got glasses. I was picking up cinder blocks on the bottom.

I had the lowrance hds 8's before I switched to humminbird. In my opinion lowrance has better 2D sonar and mapping options. Humminbird has ease of operation and in my experience, reliability, over lowrance. As far as the side imaging, side scan, down imaging, down scan debate goes neither is superior of the other and I would advise you to try both units and determine what best fits you.Answers

Yes. Older models may need a software upgrade but you can do it easily and it works like a charm.A:Â
Humminbird has just announced for 2012 that the 998c in SI View you will be able to overlay Depth and Temperature on the SI View.Images for this Answer

No. I mounted mine on the transom of my first boat. You just have to make sure the beam can clear the motor. Supposedly, you can also mount the transducer internally.A:Â
You can mount it direct to the transom. Or Humminbird has optional Thru-Hull Transducer that requires drilling hole thru boat to mount transducer.Images for this Answer

Do I need a seceond transducer and Y cable to read the bottom at high speeds(50 - 65mph) if so what are the part numbers
Answers
A:Â
If you mount the SI transducer above the bottom of the hull when the boat is on plane the SI transducer will be out of the water and will not be able to send and receive sonar data. If you have a Fiberglass Boat you can install the XP 9 20 Transducer and AS SI DB Y Cable and get On Plane Speed 2D readings.A:Â
No, Transducer has to be on the right spot on the transom.Q:Â

Yes, everything we sell at Bass Pro in regards to Humminbird product is complete. Antenna, power cable, mounting, transducer and so on. Our competitors like to box everything separate in what they say is a chance to "customize" your purchase but its really a way to make more money off the sale, we don't do that at Bass Pro. The 998c SI runs the HD-SI transducer similar to the 898c SI and 1197c SI, the 798c SI runs the "compact" SI transducer. Hope this helped you out and come see us at Bass Pro Shops Orlando.1 of 1
