The picture-like images of Humminbird® Down Imaging™ are created with high frequency sound waves emitted in razor-thin slices. The sonar returns from these waves create an instant ''snapshot'' directly below your boat. Our exclusive software analyzes the returns to verify the position of the echoes to ensure Down Imaging only shows you structure and activity directly beneath you, and not off to one side or the other. The Humminbird® 597ci HD DI Internal GPS Fishfinder Combo features a big 640Vx640H LCD 5'' color display with Dual Beam Plus sonar that has 25º and 16º beams. Performance fishfinder offers 4000 watts PTP power output and reliable depth to 350' (DI)/600'. Sonar coverage: 25º and 16º. Speed/Temp: Included. LakeMaster™ and Navionics™ compatible. In-dash mount: 5.4''H x 6.9''W.

Down Imaging™
Use Down Imaging to reveal cover and structure detail below your boat. 455kHz/75º @ -10db; 800kHz/45ordm; @ -10db.

SwitchFire™
Exclusive Humminbird® SwitchFire Sonar gives you the power to choose how displays are returned. Max Mode displays every return for the most complete picture while Clear Mode filters returns to display only fish and structure.

Dual Beam Plus
Optimized for excellent coverage of the bottom, Dual Beam Plus features, 25º and 16º beams for precision with coverage of an area equal to one third of your depth.

Built-In Map
UniMap™ covers the continental U.S. coastline, inland lakes, and rivers at 30 meters per pixel resolution to give you an accurate chart almost anywhere you travel in the United States.

Humminbird's 50-Channel GPS/WAAS receiver gives you lightning fast position fixes accurate within 2.5 meters.

Great! I use the 597 ci HD DI on my kayak for fresh/salt water. It is my first fishfinder and might even be a bit overkill for a kayak, but it is great. The DI is not necessary for all types of fishing, but it does shed some light on structure. I do not regret getting this fishfinder at all, but only gave it four stars due to the price. For $650, it should come with a credit for navionics. One of the cheaper Garmin models had it preloaded, but no DI. November 26, 2011
Great middle range depth finder I am one of those fishing tech freaks that have followed the side imaging and structure scan models since they hit the market. I waited a couple years researching depth finders before settling on this one. Given, it is not side imaging but a happy medium with the down imaging that puts it in a reasonable price range. The reason I chose this model over the Lowrance Elite with the down scan is because it had both down imaging AND typical color sonar. Looking at pictures of down imaging on the net, I noticed it was still easier to locate schools and fish on traditional sonar while structure is more apparent in down imaging mode(which proved true in use). I did try to mount this on my Skeeter as a through hull at first to maintain readings at top speed, but in testing, the difference on the down imaging in through hull vs. transom mounting was significant. An FYI, to avoid sending the transducer back and forth to the company, the through hull kit and transom kit have the same transducer. The only difference is the through hull comes with epoxy. With the transom mounting, I get clear readings up to 45 mph with the only exception occurring during sharp turns. If you really want both quality readings and high speed readings, you can do a dual mount with a switch that can be found from Hummingbird, if you want to spend the money. This depth finder has done everything promised and more. It has changed how I fish my home lake. Although I plan to upgrade the mapping, the Unimap that comes with it is good enough to mark a spot to find again and tracks your trips. It is easy to use, even for beginners to marine electronics. I have absolutely no regrets and love this depth finder. July 1, 2011
Great purchase Had to replace my old lowrance, bought this and am very happy with it so far took it out on a shallow lake today worked great. I twisted it around and was able to see it from my fishing deck even in bright sunlight. GPS maps not great but still useful. Hoping that I can find maps for Eastern Maine area. No luck so far. Expensive but still very happy with purchase. June 16, 2011
great choice After a ton of research I chose the 597ci hd di. It was slightly over my budget but it is worth it. The sonar is unbelievable and the navigation works great too. I used the nav the first five minutes in the water in dense fog and it worked like a charm. I found trees that I have fished overin the past but showed them as a hump. The sceen is well lit and is good in sunny conditions. I love having gps speed, depth, and the ability to pomark structure with easy to use controls. I will really give it the test on walleye in the next two weeks....but so far I love it. June 14, 2011

Details:
Is there a screen option that shows the standard sonar, the down imaging, and the Gps. So a screen with all three. I have heard that the standard sonar is better when the boat is traveling at high speeds? I have tried 2 different Lowrance units and have had trouble with the down imaging at speeds higher than 20 mph. I tried moving the transducer and still had trouble so I am a little concerned about the DI. Is there a screen option with just the standard sonar?

A:
On the 597 CI HD DI, you have multiple views. There is a full Sonar View, Full Down Imaging View and full Chart View. There are also multiple combo views such as the Chart/Down Combo, Down/Sonar Combo View. There is no view that would allow three views on one screen. With the standard transducer that comes with the unit, providing mounted correctly, readings are obtainable up to 40 mph. Also , keep in mind the boat hull construction and angle could affect the performance.

This unit has a setting for saltwater uses.

This has an IPX Rating of IP67 Waterproof/Submersible @ 1 m for 30 minutes and dust tight.
IP67: Enclosures constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment; to provide a degree of protection against falling dirt; against hose-directed water and the entry of water during occasional temporary submersion at a limited depth; and that will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.

I had an external antenna set up with my 318 and the quick disconnect connections are the same on the 597 . I hear that you can program the unit to use the internal or external antenna. I haven't looked at that and am not sure if mine is using the internal or external antenna, since both are hooked up or installed

Unfortunately, that will not work with this particular unit. Here is a list of units which do accept the Minn Kota Universal Sonar 2: http://store.minnkotamotors.com/media/document/2012_MK_US2CompatibilityChart.pdf

I asked this exact question to Humminbird just yesterday and here is their response:

"No sir, the US2 is not compatible with the 597ci HD DI model.

The universal sonar would be compatible with the dual beam models, not the down image models."

I had no problem installing it. Took me about an hour at most. Installed the transducer and ran the wire to under the dash. Mounted the quick disconnect and connected the power wires to battery and ground. Connected the head to the quick disconnect and it worked just fine.
