I hand load for 18 different calibers. Several different weights in each caliber. Big game, small game, varmints and target. The only bullet I use is Hornady V-max for rifle. I have used several bullets in the past and nothing compares to the consistency as Hornady produces.
I have two favorite calibers to load for. 223 and .68 SPC. I load the 68 grain BTHP's for the 223. I am getting right at 1/4" groups @100 yards with these bullets. They are deadly on prairie dogs and jack rabbits. The hollow point is just small enough that it doesn't distort at high speeds, but yet has the punch for a fast clean kill on varmints. My personal best distance, confirmed kill on a jack rabbit, by two fellow shooters, was 762 yards!
To me accuracy is everything. 1" groups just wont cut it. Neither will 1/2" groups. If I can't pull off 1/4" groups, something needs changed. Hornady bullets have been able produce groups that I have needed for years. Some of the things, I look for in bullets is consistent weights, consistent O-gives and consistent bases. Hornady time and time again comes through for me. If your getting into hand loading, you need to start with Hornady V-max. You wont be disappointed.
