Good inexpensive combo I bought the 9' 5wt combo as my first fly rod/reel combo and it works fine. I've been out a few times with it, and caught fish both times. "Real" fisherman have told me that the technology has gotten so good these days, that even inexpensive rods and reels do the job for 90% of the people out there. My buddy that's an avid fly fisherman said he wouldn't recommend taking a 8wt in this combo to Alaska, the drag on the reel isn't up to it. November 30, 2013
Outstanding value I bought this outfit as a new fly fisherman in January. It is an outstanding rig and I have caught many bream and small bass with it, but I primarily wanted to write this review to comment on the case. The photo shows the tire marks after my girlfriend accidentally ran over my case with a loud crunch, with my fly rod inside. I sadly opened the case expecting my rod to be in pieces. To my amazement there was not the slightest bit of damage to the rod and I have used it many times since with no problems. The case did sustain some visible damage but is still very much usable, I just wouldn't want to run over it again. This is a great outfit and the case is an excellent protector of your investment. Great Fly Rod and Reel Great fly rod and reel. I used it last week while fishing in my float tube. Caught one nice rainbow. This fish weighed about 3lbs. The rod and reel handled real nice. The only problem I had was ordering it. It came with a tippet and all you had to do was tie your fly and fish. I used the rod and reel two times all day. Not really much of a test but it worked like a rod and reel should. July 18, 2011
Excellent Product--Right Out of th Box I have been fishing for many years, but I am new to fly fishing. I recently completed a fly fishing course. Then, I bought this Hobbs Creek combo, with case, a couple of weeks ago to get started fly fishing. I have caught dozens of fish already. I started catching fish the first time I used this combo. This combo has proven great for trout and panfish in Missouri. The length (8'6") and weight (5wt.) are great if you want to catch a variety of fish in different types of conditions. It is no problem for somone new to fly fishing to use this combo right out of the box. You just tie on a fly and go fishing with it. Plus, a nice, durable, protective case is included. The price is very reasonable for a combo of this quality. I think this is such a great product to use to start out in fly fishing, I wanted to make sure to share this information. I look forward getting years of enjoyable fishing experiences out of this combo. July 21, 2010

A:
The 5 or 6 weight will be great for Bass and most other freshwater species. It is typically suggested to use at least a 10 weight rod when chasing most saltwater species. Tarpon grow quite large and a fly rod that works well for Bass would not be effective in fighting them or in casting the appropriate sized lures.

Carrying Case

Details:
The first picture shows the rod & reel but the second picture shows a hard travel case with the rod in 4 pieces with the reel.

The description doesn't address this issue.

Does this combo come with the case on ALL offered sizes?

Good question. Same rod, but you have heavier line so it'll cast further

A:
Fly rods are not rated by action. The heavier the line the larger the lure that can be used, and the larger fish that can be caught.

how much backing?

Details:
I've never setup a reel before and was surprised to have received this combo unassembled.
How much backing should I apply to the reel before I tie on the fly line? i've searched forums and the best answer has been to 'wing it'. That's not good enough for me.
Should I use the entire spool of backing that came in the combo?

A:
Most fly fishers fill the spool of the reel with as much backing as possible to allow them to retrieve faster and to reduce line memory. Thereby the line is less likely to tangle. Read the reel capacity chart to determine the amount of backing needed for the reel.

A:
I went ahead and spooled the entire amount of the backing provided, tied it to and then spooled the fly line - it was the appropriate amount of both.
This might depend upon the weight of the line you order, but I could be incorrect. I ordered mine with 5 weight
