The H&R Ultra Slug Single Shot Shotgun has combined the heavy barrel concept of the Ultra Varmint rifle to achieve a level of accuracy previously unheard of in firearms below the 1,000 mark. The Ultra Slug incorporates the transfer bar safety system, a heavy action, and an extremely heavy wall in its rifled 24'' barrel. Comes with a 3" chamber, scope mount, and laminated stock.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Slug Rifle I have owned this slug rifle for over 10 years and love it. I have shot 1 1/2 - 2 inch groups at a hundred yards from a bench which I think is very good. I had thought initially that I wanted and multi-shot slug rifle but the reality is, when you lay the cross hairs on the deer's shoulder and pull the trigger, it drops where it stands. I have never needed a second shot. Not that I am anything special as I most definitely am not, but a slug from a 12 gauge will do that to a deer. Some things to consider. The gun is heavy as the barrel is quite thick so consider that when/if you take standing shots. Too, the gun kicks like no other gun I have ever shot so brace yourself. I swear it kicks like a cannon. The gun was made to shoot slugs one at a time and H&R got it right. You won't go wrong if you get this gun. September 10, 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Gun I use this for deer hunting and have killed a couple with it is a great buy for close range in the brush overall a great buy. January 26, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by its a hammerknocker Mine is definetly a shooter. 2-3 MOA at 100 yds. It kicks like a mule even though its a really heavy gun. Itll kick your teeth out so man up. Slug guns are real fussy eaters but mine likes feds. Gonna shoot some Hornadays soon in 2 3/4. Not enough difference in those and 3 inch ballistic wise but recoil is less. Use a 4X fixed power. I have the H&R 20g thumbhole stock, and shoot the Remingtion Copper Solids 5/8 ounce because they're the most accurate in my particular gun. The recoil isn't too bad at all. You may need to test several slugs to find the one your gun wants.

I have owned the 870 and this kicks way beyond that. That first time will give you an "Oh my gosh" experience, but you get used to it though.

I have one in 20gauge. The kick is much less than an 870 or other gun. The Ultra Slug's heavy barrel helps tone the kick down. I use 3" Remington Accu-tip shells which will kick harder than many others you could use to get the recoil even lower. I have never been able to get a gun to shoot a slug like the H&R I use now.

A:
Slug guns are notoriously picky about ammo. You will have to experiment with different ammos to see which one your gun likes. Even identical guns may shoot identical ammo much differently. My 20g H&R likes the Rem Copper Solids 2.75" 5/8 ounce. I hear the 12g H&R likes the Hornady SSTs and the Accutips

I have had the best luck with Remington shells such as Copper Solid, Accu-tip, Core Lokt...but my favorite is the 3" 20 ga. Accu-tip. Perfect deer load.
