I bought the eTrex Venture HC only to be disappointed by the VERY small memory meaning only a few maps could be downloaded to the GPS. I returned that one and bought this one (eTrex Legend HCx) and have been VERY happy with it. It has room for a micro SD card (which are cheap these days) so there is room for just about every map in the whole world to be downloaded so you can take it with you.

This is my 1st GPS so I don't really have a comparison. But, I'm really starting to like this one. It has a very strong antenna and it even aquires satellites while indoors or under other cover. Too many feature to mention, but most come in very handy. A couple of features some may find necessary are the lack of a magnetic compass or barometric altimeter. I don't miss either because as soon as you start moving, that data appears. I assume having the compass & altimeter may make for better accuracy, but my works just fine for my needs. One feature I really like is the micro SD card slot & the included topo disc. Mine came with a 1GB card so it had plenty of room to load any maps I wanted. It has a nice case with a belt clip and it's pretty solid as I've dropped it many times w/o incident.

I don't know how, or why you would want to hook it to a VHF radio. But with enough fittings and connectors you could. Wouldn't do anything once it was connected, but I suppose you could.Answers

This comes with Garmin's TOPO U.S. 100K mapping on DVD. This mapping can be downloaded and used with your Garmin GPS unit. You will need to purchase a microSD card to download your mapping to. The mapping "requires a 4 GB or larger SDHC or microSDHC Card to hold the map image file and any other files such as updates that are needed to ensure the maps will work with your Garmin GPS unit."
