Rated 5 out of 5 by snowsurfer2076 550t great choice
purchased this about 3 weeks ago, so far ive used this for geo cacheing and a couple of hunting trips. this is the first gps ive owned and i was able to figure almost everything out, useing just the quick start guide. many people complain about the screen, i dont really find this to be a problem, just turn up the bightness a bit. no complaints other than the fact that you can not enter any info on the calander, such as hunting trips or season dates, not a big deal though. well worth the money.

Bought the GPS to take to a late elk hunt on an island. Going to a Northwest rain forest during the rainy season I was a little concerned about electronics getting wet. We used the marine map to locate and follow the channel into the island, and switched to the topo map to hunt. Without it there would have been no way to tell which direction to go, after walking for hours and returning to camp in dark. It brought me right back to camp. I marked waypoints for spots of interest with a photo of each to remind me what was where. Plenty of battery life left after the whole days use. At the end of the day we sat two of them on the table and shared waypoints and info with each other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CaptainCrunch767 Great GPS
I bought my Dad this GPS and we used it while he visited me on the yacht I sailed through the Caribbean and Virgin Islands, then again while fishing around Wisconsin and the Great Lakes. It worked great everywhere we went and it performed just as good as the previous model but the screen was easier to read in the sunlight than the previous years model that I own.
We also used the newer one with the plugin power option where we could keep it on continuously without using batteries by plugging it into a 12 volt charger when doing over night passages / trips so we could always see our speed and direction along with where we were. The older model also has this feature under the battery options area, but I never knew about it until my dad read about it in the manual then found out my older model one also did the same thing. This is an EXCELLENT function to know about when doing long range trips.
The older model that I have was also used while I traveled around South Africa, and while sailing from South Africa to the United States. Worked great from South Africa to St helena Island then again onto Brazil. So crossing the Atlantic with this as a back up GPS worked great, then from Brazil all the way through the Caribbean and onto the United States it worked excellent.
Highly recommend this model and the previous model having used both extensively on various yachts as a back up GPS and also smaller boats as a primary GPS.

Yes, there is a 12V vehicle power cable available for the Garmin Oregon 550t. At this time you would need to order the charger over the phone at 1 (800) 227-7776. The item number for the charger is 533-847-00.
This unit will show you bodies of water, but they will not be in detail. As you can see in the product picture water is just shown as blue. For better detail you can purchase additional BlueChart mapping directly from Garmin. I have provided a link to information on BlueChart below.
Yes you can set it up to leave a trail of everywhere you went, and you can set up the trail to post on the gps more or less frequently depending on if you need really accurate tracks while hiking for example or longer range tracks with less points used for longer trips like if used while sailing or boating.
