Garmin GPSMAP 64st Handheld Navigation Unit 1 5 1 1
Trip Odometer Increments when stopped Bought this to replace my gpsmap 62 that dove overboard while kayaking. Based on my very favorable regard for the 62, I was looking forward to the upgrade. The first problem is minor - the location icon (big triangle showing your position) is HUGE. It takes up far to much screen real estate and cannot be customized to be smaller. Ok... I could live with that. The real problem is the trip odometer. I was surprised to find out I could kayak at 10.4 miles an hour! No... the odometer is bad. I reset the unit, updated to the latest software and tried again. The odometer increments even when you are stationary. This is not a GPS drift issue. Garmin support could not fix and recommended I exchange it. I did the exchange. I turned it on and left it on my desk and returned later to discover I had traveled over a mile at a max speed of 2.7 mph. I returned the second unit and the store recommended I just get a refund. The serial numbers of both units were within 900 of each other... maybe it was a bad run. The high serial number was 3BR002364. Before you take yours home, look at the serial number and make sure it is not close to this one. As for me... I have lost confidence in Garmin and will have to look for a different brand. Kudos to Bass Pro for having such a great support policy - no hassle at all on the exchange or the refund September 7, 2014
