Unless you have very small fingers.... go with the large one. They work fine. One minor point Just a light "sanding" with very fine sand paper will take off any burr. I use them frequently with no issues to speak of. Any breakage of the feather is typically due to a poor feather quality.

It takes much more hand strength than expected to open these hackle pliers to grip a feather in fly tying. The larger size is even more difficult, and I had to use both hands to open it.
An adjustment is definitely needed in order for the pliers to be practical and comfortable to use.
Make them easier to open, and I'll recommend these pliers.----Charles
