Started using the eagle claw 254 tinned seaguard after reading books by Kenny Abrames and Ray Bondorew who praise the EC 253/254 hooks exclusively for tying saltwater flatwing patterns. Hooks are lighter than the usual stainless sw fly hooks, which in combination with bucktail and long saddle hackles allows the fly to hold naturally in the current rather than sink like a stone. I use the 1-3/0.They have a nice ring eye, and are sharp out of the box but I like to touch them up with a file before tying pattern to make them REALLY sticky sharp, The 254 seaguards are great hooks for tying Rays Flies. I also use the 254SS for some applications-it is a much beefier stainless hook-great for tying teasers for plugging.
