Holder itself is OK. Base is a prob. Aluminim base does strip out and the wingnut is hard to tighten enough to secure the holder from spinning. Replaced the wingnut with a stainless nut and a washer. Just need to carry a 9/16" wrench. September 16, 2008
Rod holders Put one on each corner of my little 16 ft aluminum bass boat so you can fishout of either side of the boat. They are very strong and i like the fact that they are adjustable side to side. October 7, 2010
Sturdy Sturdy, simple, not cheap, but not too expensive either. Stay away from the stamped metal and plastic lightweights and get this. October 21, 2013
no problems I guide crappie fishing and catfish trips I have used these rod holders every day about 150 days a year with zero problems. February 28, 2009

Looking for something I can use that doesn't require permanent mounting, thought maybe the base of this could be inserted into an oak lock.

Most oar lock holes are 5/8” and the threading on this is only 3/8”. This would not fit tight.

Hi, you might be able to use on a kayak but the best rod holder is the Flush Mount Rod Holder SKU 1767461 or one like SKU 1648859. Thank you!

Details:
I use 10' and 13' catfish poles and the handles are quite large so I need to be sure the butt end will fit. They also protrude quite a bit behind the reel.

If you buy two sets and use the larger ones for the rear, they will fit.
