Rated 4 out of 5 by Would Recommend But Do Have A Couple Concerns I hunt ducks and geese on Maryland’s eastern shore. I purchased this vest to replace a fleece vest I’ve used for years as a layer directly underneath my outer coat. The vest is extremely comfortable. The fleece lined collar feels great and there are no buttons or zippers that will ever make contact with bare skin even if the vest is zipped all the way to the top. Also the available pockets (fleece lined hand warmer pockets, magnattach and zippered breast pockets and deep cargo pockets) were all very well designed and add great functionality to the vest. I’ve only had the vest for a short time, but I would recommend it. However, there are a couple things that concern me. 1) I expected the vest to be thicker. I have a 650 fill power goose down coat from Eddie Bauer that is significantly thicker than this 600 fill power vest. I guess the extra 50 points makes a pretty big difference, but considering how many 500 and 550 fill power jackets and vests there are on the market I thought a 600 fill power vest would be quite puffy. None the less, it is quite warm and considering I’m primarily using it as a layer the lack of bulk isn’t necessarily a bad thing, BUT 2) The vest is constantly shedding little feathers. I hope there is more of the supper light type of down that doesn’t actually have a pointy end on it, than there is of the tiny little feathers that keep poking their way out of the vest, and once the majority of the more rigid little feathers with pointy ends have worked their way out of the vest it will still have plenty of down in place to keep me warm on bitterly cold mornings in Maryland; only time will tell. I did notice on Drake’s website that the olive vest I purchased is made of Poly-twill outer shell fabric (non-waterproof), and the camo version is made of Refuge™ HS shell fabric with HyperShield™ waterproof technology. Maybe the camo version wouldn’t shed feathers. As of now I think it’s a great vest because it’s light, warm and extremely well laid out (pockets, collar, etc.). Sizes run very big. I wear a large the world over, but the large in this vest was way too big. The medium actually fits perfectly, which is very abnormal for me. November 26, 2012
