Keeping People Informed Took the inReach SE to Ethiopia with a volunteer group. The initial activation, entering contacts and set up the mapshare, facebook and twitter feeds were pretty straight forward for me. I paired with my iPhone to download maps of the area. The battery run time was really impressive - left it turned on during daylight clipped to the backpack and charged every 4th day. User interface of the yes, no and directional toggle got easier the more I used it. I did like the word assistance on the keyboard but using the preset messages was faster. I used the paired phone for most of the long typing. Hoping to be able to update folks at home of the group status, I ran the tracking feature most of the time and people really enjoyed following our location. Most of the messaging was sent through Facebook or twitter which worked great. Being able to receive and answer questions about the trip real-time was also very helpful. I think it is a great product. Thankfully I can't comment on having to use the SOS function but I think everyone in the group was appreciative of knowing the service was there. October 2, 2013
Great product Works great. AS advertised, and better. They just added firmware 2.4 based on customer feedback which adds a GPS menu screen for current location and share location button to make it "one touch" to send you location to your hunting buddies, etc. My hunting group tried a radio based units in the mountains to locate each other and keep in contact. Those units did not work. Their peer to peer and texting were worthless in the field. I have tested all the inreach se functions and am happy to report that they work exactly as advertised, but for me even better then expect. Texting to/from Inreach to inreach, cell phones, and emails, all work every time. I haven't really done much with the iphone maps, but we did test the feature on the map where it request an update location from the unit, and it worked great. Hit locate on the map, it found the new location of the inreach, and posted it the map without any help from the inreach user. Great way to find a down hunter or have your wife check you current location. Also, I was tested receiving texts with the unit off. When I turned it on, they all came in. Nice. setting up the unit took about 5 minutes with average #me# gadget skills. December 22, 2013
very confusing product/customer service I set the whole thing up, sent some test text messages which were received by both my cell phone and computer, paid for the monthly recurrring charges by credit card, got an order number, etc. etc. i Logged out and then tried to log back in but I 'had no account set-up". I called tech support and they had no record of my account. Said I had mistakenly stumbled on their 'beta' page. I entered the url address as shown on the booklet but it was incrorect!!. So now I have to wait and re-enter all the information when my system is purged. I don't even know what they are talking about. I couldn't find a beta page if my life depended on it, let alone waiting for them to 'sanitize my account'. . The posting showed as my credit card being charged with an order number #I checked: it had not gone through on my credit card#. Yet I was able to set up all my emergency contact info and send and receive messages in our back yard. A little leery about sending him up alone. If I had not rechecked the account, would the InReach SE worked in the north woods of Canada where they just had a bear mauling? Going to try again and again and again until I am sure about this. I will report back and re-check my 'stars' if they are pro-active on this matter and can assure me it won't happen again.. June 13, 2013
My favorite new backcountry item!!! The InReach gives me the safety net that I need to push further and see whats waiting for me over the next ridge line. InReach features, like 2-way texting, track and share, and the SOS function I can notify my family and friends exactly where I am in the world. DeLorme's device keeps me always in reach, no matter how far off the grid I am. I love it. As a business man, and father, i just like to stay in touch and im excited that I now can with the InReach! Thanks DeLorme! September 4, 2013

Does this device give you all the typical GPS functionalities like showing a topographical map and the ability to mark waypoints and make a "breadcrumb" trail? Such as marking your car... then points on your hike... where you took an animal? How do you update maps for this device? At this time (end of 2014) How much is the Monthly Service Fee?

Answer this Question

The inReach SE has an internal GPS and you are able to view you location coordinates on the device, however, there isn't a map on the device, nor a way to mark waypoints, create routes or view a digital compass.

However, if you pair the device with your smartphone using DeLorme's Earthmate App, you can use the app to send and receive messages, download and cache detailed topographic maps and NOAA charts, transforming your smartphone into a global messaging and navigation device (without the need for cellular data--it's satellite driven)!

If you're looking for a satellite communication device with built-in navigation features, such as waypoints, routing, a digital compass and a map page, check out the DeLorme inReach Explorer. It has these great features and it, too, pairs with your smartphone. The inReach Explorer paired with the smartphone enables the Earthmate app to include the additional navigation features, too. So you are able to use the device as a standalone device, or paired if you care to take your (iOS or Android) smartphone or tablet with you.

Since this is a satellite communicator, there is a monthly subscription fee. There are contract-free month-to-month options that allow you to pay for service only when you need it as well as annual contract plans if you'd like to commit for a full year at a slightly lower cost per month. You can view the plans here>>

I hope this helps! If you have any further questions, you can reach me by email:
