DeLorme® inReach™ SE Satellite Communicator
Works great. AS advertised, and better. They just added firmware 2.4 based on customer feedback which adds a GPS menu screen for current location and share location button to make it "one touch" to send you location to your hunting buddies, etc.
My hunting group tried a radio based units in the mountains to locate each other and keep in contact. Those units did not work. Their peer to peer and texting were worthless in the field.
I have tested all the inreach se functions and am happy to report that they work exactly as advertised, but for me even better then expect. Texting to/from Inreach to inreach, cell phones, and emails, all work every time.
I haven't really done much with the iphone maps, but we did test the feature on the map where it request an update location from the unit, and it worked great. Hit locate on the map, it found the new location of the inreach, and posted it the map without any help from the inreach user. Great way to find a down hunter or have your wife check you current location.
Also, I was tested receiving texts with the unit off. When I turned it on, they all came in. Nice.
setting up the unit took about 5 minutes with average #me# gadget skills.

so far so good
I purchased one of theses last week mainly for the SOS feature. So far this was simple to activate and use. It took about five minutes and I had an account and started sending text messages and facebook up- dates to test it out . it works exactly as advertised. I downloaded the earth-mate app onto my droid and downloaded maps and used the Bluetooth to connect. Everything was so simple to do without having to refer to the instructions. I am not very good with technology but this was so simple I think anyone can use it.
One neat feature is that with each message you send has a link to Google maps with your location marked...this is a great way to check in and let family know where you are when no cell service is available
I fully charged it and sent 4 messages, a facebook up-date and entered all of my contacts into it. Then I left it on. After 5 days it still had 72% battery life.
I retired today and I am about to travel from Wash DC to Alaska the long way and will be doing a lot of back country camping along the way, so I will up date this after I have used it more. So far I am very impressed

Keeping People Informed
Took the inReach SE to Ethiopia with a volunteer group. The initial activation, entering contacts and set up the mapshare, facebook and twitter feeds were pretty straight forward for me. I paired with my iPhone to download maps of the area. The battery run time was really impressive - left it turned on during daylight clipped to the backpack and charged every 4th day. User interface of the yes, no and directional toggle got easier the more I used it. I did like the word assistance on the keyboard but using the preset messages was faster. I used the paired phone for most of the long typing. Hoping to be able to update folks at home of the group status, I ran the tracking feature most of the time and people really enjoyed following our location. Most of the messaging was sent through Facebook or twitter which worked great. Being able to receive and answer questions about the trip real-time was also very helpful. I think it is a great product. Thankfully I can't comment on having to use the SOS function but I think everyone in the group was appreciative of knowing the service was there.

My favorite new backcountry item!!!
The InReach gives me the safety net that I need to push further and see whats waiting for me over the next ridge line. InReach features, like 2-way texting, track and share, and the SOS function I can notify my family and friends exactly where I am in the world. DeLorme's device keeps me always in reach, no matter how far off the grid I am. I love it. As a business man, and father, i just like to stay in touch and im excited that I now can with the InReach! Thanks DeLorme!
