Rated 4 out of 5 by 1happynut solid kit I had my eyes on this reel for a while, the high speed retrieve was what I was looking, as I fish the deep waters on the West Coast of Ireland for Pollock, Cod & Ling etc. I bought the 40 modeI and wasn't let down, the reel has a super quick retrieve with cranking power and nice smooth free running spool, I have owned it for 18 months now with no problems. You can use it to fish feathers, gill a shad or ledger a large bait on the bottom, I have had fish ranging from mackeral to shark on it and never a squeak out of it. I'll be off to Florida shortly and plan to use it for what it was designed for, high speed jigging, I may even get another reel while I'm there! February 24, 2012

In talking with a rep from Daiwa he recommended the 6.3 ratio model or the 35 hyper model for more cranking power. October 26, 2010

Is this reel used for long casting?

Details:

I am getting into salt water fishing off the pier and i need to be able to find a reel i can cast far with and still have enough line for a fight from the fish. i will also need a pole.

This is a great reel for casting. However, long casting really has more to do with the rod and technique than the reel. We use these reels for surf fishing with 12-13ft rods and can cast way out.

Best thing about this reel is the retrieve speed. It retrieves line a 52 inches a turn of the handle. It is the fastest I know of at present. Also, it has no parts that will rust which is also great for salt fishing.

Without giving the name of a particular reel my recommendation is that you buy one of the more popular brands and get the best you can afford I have had the best performance in pier fishing with a spinning reel spooled with an appropriate test of braid line. As for the rod I would again say get the best you can afford from among the popular brands. I have been satisfied using rods from 7 to 10 feet in length with a fast tip for bite detection. Your rod will be leaning on the rail most of the time. Always use a good circle hook to catch more fish.
