The forward section (containing the upright bar) can be adjusted back to accommodate a curved cowing. It fit my Yamaha 20 hp. It will work but it is of poor quality, cumbersome and not much of an improvement over just lifting the cowling. If I absolutely could not lift the motor by the cowling I would perhaps use this but I returned mine.

Viewers may note the picture of the tilter on top of a 25 hp. Yamaha. The important thing to observe is that the top of the motor is virtually flat. I own a 25 hp Yamaha 4-stroke, and its shell is much more curved on top, as are the majority of most motors you will see from Yamaha and Mercury, if not Suzuki as well.
The curvature of that shell caused the horizontal bar to contact the shell with the handle end still well in the air. If the owner pulls down, he/she will dent the shell.
There are two possible solutions for this. One is to substitute a curved bar for the horizontal bar in the picture, custom-made to accommodate the curvature of the shell. This is what I had done, at a cost of approximately twice the cost of the item (but still cheaper than a power lift). Of course doing that renders the horizontal bar no longer adjustable, which is okay as long as the modification fits your motor.
The second would be to make the legs near the handle of the bar longer, & possibly able to be angled to fit snugly against the shell. However, even then the legs might not fit flushly with the shell.
The advantage of the straight horizontal bar is that you can adjust the position of the handle related to where you stand & pull from, which allows you to find an optimal position for leverage & torque.
Bottom line: Check out the curvature of your shell/cowling. If there's any curvature (& there is on most motors), recognize you should find a pipe shop or guy that does motor-trailer repairs to help you modify it.

i received the product yesterday and used it this morning.I have had major heart surgery and as a result do not have a sternum.THis makes lifting anything heavy out of the question for me and thus i thought i may have to sell my 18 hp Tohatsu and get a smaller motor.
Happily the lifter worked fine and gave alot more leverage to tilt the motor.Anyone with a heart condition should use it.
It could be improved slightly i think and may contact the manufacturer in the future to discuss.
