Cortland®'s Micron® fly line backing is one of the toughest, smoothest and most popular line backing in the industry. Sporting a florescent yellowish green color, this highly visible backing features a small diameter allowing you to load your reel to capacity just in case you hook up with a long-running speed demon. This high-quality backing stretches very little and works to create more efficient casts. 20-lb. 100 yard spool.

awesome backing this backing is great its thin and smooth so you can hold alot of it i have it on a #6 fenwick world class reel and fenwick techna fly line and i dont plan on changing my setup any time soon. December 28, 2009
Great material This is a great material for attaching stinger hooks on articulated streamers. Much better than using heavy weight monofilament. April 19, 2011
Good Purchase Good backing that does not rot. Thank God I haven't had to actually use it before. March 5, 2012

A:
Most fly line is 80 to 130 feet long aprx. depending on Brand. But you need backing so if the fish is large and runs out all you line you can let him run and play him out so you can strip him back to you. Plus the backing helps fill the arbor so if you reel in the line it takes less time to crank it back on to the reel.

A:
Fly line backing is a braided line that is directly attached to your spool before you fly line. It is used to not only take up space on your spool, but to provide additional line when a big fish makes a good run.

A typical fly line is only around one hundred feet. If you have thirty to fifty of those feet in the water when a fish hits, you only have another fifty or so to give until he bottoms out and breaks it off.

The backing adds more line for the fish to run out. A typical fly shop will put on about 125-175 yards of backing. Coupled with your fly line, you should have somewhere between 300-500 feet of total line.
