in case you hook into a big one so you can letb the fish runA:Â
A couple different reasons depending on your application. Normal fly line leght is 90 feet which if your after saltwater fish or species that run just isn't going to hack it, so you need a backing to fight long running fish. Even when using a flyrod for fish that don't run long distances the backing on the reel increases the diameter of the reel causing less of a coiling effect on your flyline. I recomend using enough backing on all reels to bring the line out to within 1/4 ' of the reel rim.Top 500 Contributor

Backing fills your reel so your retrive rate is better, a reel with just fly line on it picks up less line per turn than a reel full with backing. Also with fly line you have just 100' to work with, should a large fish take out line the backing gives you a lot of line to fall back on.1 of 1
