Wasn't sure when I ordered this lantern just how good the light would be from the LED bulbs. When I received the lantern and put batteries in it I was very happy with the light output. The fact that I can vary the light output by turn the adjustment know, just like on a gas lantern, was a really nice feature. Will have to wait and see regarding how long the batteries.

I am a flashlight geek, and have many different kinds of flashlights. Years ago (25+), I bought a small fluorescent tube lantern that worked great and put out quite a bit of light for what it was. It finally quit working. I wanted a good LED lantern to replace it with because I know LED's use less energy and would not need the batteries changed as frequently as the fluorescent lantern did, however, I bought one LED flashlight early on and was so disappointed with it, I had been leery of LED flashlights and lanterns since. The local BPS allowed my wife and I to try out the lanterns on display (the associate had to go get permission from his manager and then get batteries) and I was instantly impressed with the light output from this lantern, compared to the others. My wife, too. It was easily equal to or greater than the fluorescent lantern ever was. You can literally read by it with no problems (OK, I would not recommend long-term or frequent reading). After seeing how much brighter it was over the others, we ended up going home with one (not the display).
We mostly use this lantern during power outages, but as someone who used to go camping as a child through young adult, this lantern would also be great for camping or a hunting lodge, night fishing, whatever.
The biggest downside, IMHO, is the battery situation. It uses 8 D cells (actually, we are running it on 6 D cells because we did not have enough, seems to be OK, my guess is that we are using alkalines that are 1.5V and the lantern is designed to also be used with rechargeables, that only put out 1.2V) and there is no option or provision for a rechargeable battery pack with a convenience charger. If you use rechargeable batteries, you will need to remove them from the lantern to recharge (someone who is inventive may be able to modify the lantern to use a battery pack and have a way to charge it without removing the pack). I also agree with another reviewer who said that there should be a 12V input option so that you can run the lantern off of a car, ATV, etc. battery and not use the D cells.
I have been researching rechargeables for use in this lantern. If you decide to use rechargeable D cells, forget getting the batteries from Radio Shack, Batteries plus or Harbor Freight. Their batteries have very low capacities and are very expensive for the privilege of low capacity batteries. The best bang for the buck are available from online retailers and should be easily found using Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc.
The other weakness is the screw-on bottom for the batteries. It is real easy to start that crooked and possibly break the bottom. I have not broken the one we have, but you have to be focused on getting the bottom started straight. This weakness mars an otherwise well built lantern, IMHO.
I am trying to convince the SWMBO to get a second lantern, its that good, IMHO.

This lantern is great. I also use propane lanterns and ones that run on other fuel, but this is a great addition especially if you have it in a place where the exhausts/fumes could be dangerous. This lantern puts out great light and very simple to use. Highly recommend.
