The magnesium makes starting fires very easy. i usually shave off a pile about the size of a nickel and it is sufficient to start a fire with ease. It has lasted me for months. I have started dozens of fires with it and it is still going strong. sort of hard on a knife so id recommend using an older knife specifically for the use of fire making.

I purchased 2 of these one for my wife's hunting back pack and one for my own. After they arrived her and I went out in the yard, which by the way had 12 inches of snow on it we scrapped a couple small areas with our boots took some dryer lint that we keep for this reason and used the fire starter as the directions said and within a matter of a few mins we each had a nice fire started. We will say that we think it will be a little tough on the knives but after all its an emergency item so we dont see that as really being a major problem....
