A:
The size sinker depends on the rating of your rod and the test of your line but I would go as heavy as possible. Use a size #6 spring treble hook for channel cats and to hold the bait on really well for long hard casting. Tie your treble hook on a 6-inch leader below a swivel. Above the swivel add a plastic bead with a sliding egg sinker above that and then fish on the bottom for most locations. In heavy silted riverbeds you might want to fish just off the bottom with a slip bobber.

A:
I get the best catfish results when using several types of bait, even if catching them on only one type. The variety seems to draw their curiosity. I use chicken livers or gizzards on some hooks, catfish soap on at least one, and prepared catfish baits on others. The various prepared catfish baits all seem to work about the same for me. The chicken livers may be the best, but fall off the hook. The chicken gizzards are almost as good, but don't fall off.

The only difference between the two is that dough-bait can be used with regular and treble hooks while dip-bait will only stay on the hook if you buy the special hooks with plastic sleeves usually referred to as "worms". I prefer to use the dough-bait with spring treble hooks as it's easy to put on and doesn't come off easily.

I've caught cats on both, however I've caught more on the dough. To answer your question while they both work well for me I think the Dough Bait works a little better.

depending on what type of hook you use, the temperature of bait and outside temperature and how rough you cast, when i cast i loft it, and i use a treble hook, do not use a spring treble, just a size 6 treble and just enough bait to cover the hook, it should stay on for a while

It can fly off if you're using plain treble hooks and have to cast far. If you're using dough bait treble hooks, it doesn't, it's actually hard to get off by hand when you're done fishing.

No need to cast it far during mid May to mid July around rocks at the bank. I cast out about 20 yards.
