No shortcuts taken here; all Medallion GT Reels are crafted on a lightweight, rugged one-piece aluminum frame and feature a drilled, machined-aluminum spool for solid castability. Exclusive Radial Cast Control uses centrifugal force to add pinpoint control to your casting; the six-bearing system features double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings and Powerlock™ instant anti-reverse, enabling precision retrieves and forceful hooksets. Equipped with Browning’s own Magnum Drag system, an alternating stack of six carbon-Teflon® and stainless steel discs, for smooth resistance all the way through the drag curve. Perforated Recurve-style aluminum handle with soft rubber knob.

Only when you retrieve! The line guide doesn't move when in free spool or when casting!

It does not move when cast, just like every other low profile reel except the new Ardent. No big deal anyway.

I am wanting to start getting into a little more catfishing. I do some bass fishing and I like the feel of a low profile baitcast reel. I was wandering if this reel would hold up ok if I would hook into a pretty good sized catfish. What about the wide spool version? Would it hold up to some braided line and a good sized cat? Thanks for your input.

I had the same question two weeks ago. I think the reel is not intended to be used for extreme catfishing. I would recommend Abu Garcia 5 or 6000 series for catfishing. I haven't tried the BPS CatMaxx yet.

The difference is, one is a bit bigger and heavier, also holds more line!

Unless you will be going after fish that will make long hard runs, and you need the extra line capacity, then go with the wide spool.

If not,then the regular one will do just fine! They are just as strong and good as one an other!

i would recoomend a wide spool for trolling, stripers, saltwater or any time you need more line capacity.

the gear ratio mostly, the 7.1 retrieves more line in per handle turn than a 6.1 for example.

I know this question would probably be a better question for Browning but maybe you guys could pass it along. I'm sure any fish that needs such a large drag rating might take all 120 yds and leave you cursing. So why not?

I think 17 lbs of drag is way more than enough for any low profile baitcaster when you consider that you would normally set your drag at 1/3 of the pound test of your line. Are you using 50 lb test line on this reel??!! One of my favorite reels, the Shimano Scorpion 1000, has only 3 lbs of drag and it works fine!

The drag gearing is most likely the same. If the center of the wide spool is also slightly larger in diameter (which it would need to be to resist flexing) then the drag strength would be slightly lower. Simple gear ratio mechanics.

The wide spool is better(some think)for braided or heavy lines,not just to fight bigger fish.

This reel DOES NOT HAVE A DUAL BREAKING SYSTEM!!!! I has a centrifugal breaking system!

You press on the button with the Browning logo on it, and twist up, and the side plate pops off, then you turn the breaks on or off!

No magnets involved!

it has a centrifugal brake and no, all models do not have a flipping switch. there is only one which does.

Yes, but the magnetic brake is under a side plate and must be removed to adjust. It is a bit of a pain, but the reel works great.

This reel has dual braking system. Only the flippin model has the flippin capabilities.
